Mushet and Hamilton
- Kilmarnock
James Mushet, born in Kilmarnock 1804, parents John Mushet and Jean Hamilton who married in 1802. James married Helen Garrie (also spelt Gorie), in Glasgow, and died in 1870 in Hutchesontown, Glasgow. He was an engine fitter - and from his death record so was his father.
On the death record, the parents are given as James Mushet and Jane Hamilton, but it's more likely to be John and Jean. Anybody with info on Kilmarnock Mushets and Hamiltons?

Barnes/Barns, Wyllie/Wylie in Kilmarnock
- Kilmarnock
I'm looking for any information at all about the background of Robert J. Barnes (sometimes Barns) and/or his wife Ann (nee Wyllie) who were living in Kilmarnock from the 1840s to the 1860s (I have their entry from the 1861 census, but have not had access to earlier censuses). They, and most if not all of their children, emigrated to Massachusetts in the early 1870s.
Robert, an ironworks labourer while in Scotland, was born between about 1818 and 1821 in Scotland or Ireland, of Scottish parents (per US 1880 census). Ann (known as Annie)was born probably in September 1818 in Scotland or Ireland of a Scottish father and an Irish mother. Robert and Annie's children that I know of were Mary C.Barnes, b Sep 1842 Kilmarnock; David Barnes b 1845 prob.in Ireland; William Wyllie Barnes b Nov 1846 in Scotland or Ireland; Robert J. Barnes b Feb 1849 Kilmarnock; Hannah Barnes b 1851 Kilmarnock; Hugh W. Barnes supposedly b March 1855 Kilmarnock but I can't trace his birth in the Scottish statutory register; Ann Jane Barnes b 31 Jan 1856 Kilmarnock; James Banks Barnes b 9 Feb 1858 Kilmarnock.
I have not yet traced the marriage of Robert and Ann, or any of their parents. I have a good deal of information about later generations which I would be delighted to share.

James Reid - Kilmarnock Area
- Kilmarnock
I am trying to find information about my ggg grandfather a James Reid who married Magdalen Hillhouse in Kilmarnock in 1802. They had six children that I know of - James Carse 1805, Agnes 1808, Robert 1810, Margaret 1813, John 1815 (my gg grandfather) and Robert 1819. The family seems to have been located in the Kilmarnock area and I believe that his son James Carse married a Jean Wyllie who may have been a lady in waiting at Rowallan Castle. I have found a James Reid (baron officer at Rowallan Castle) buried in Fenwick in 1849 and a Mrs Reid (his wife) buried in 1845 who may be the James I'm looking for but can't be sure. The line of Reids that I'm interested in were Land Stewards/Nurserymen. I also note that two of James children had "Carse" as a middle name, possibly from an earlier marriage. Does anybody have any information on these Reids??
My gg grandfather John Reid married a Jean Brown in Kilmarnock in 1838, but I can't locate any children from this marriage other than Hillhouse Glen (about 1847 my g grandfather) and his brother Robert T 1856. I believe there may have been a William and John. Does anybody have any information on these Reids also??

- Kilmarnock
I am searching for any information regarding James Findlay, born 22 January 1836 & Margaret Paton, born in 1840, the daughter of John Paton and Margaret Morton, both from Kilmarnock.
James' parents were Charles Findlay (born in 1792) & Jean Lemont or Limont, who married in Dreghorn, Ayrshire, Scotland, on 7 April 1821.
They had 7 children:-
1) - Jean Findlay, born 12 May 1822,
2) - John Findlay, born 30 April 1824,
3) - Robert Findlay, born 7 June 1826,
4) - Charles Findlay, born 25 July 1828,
5) - Margaret Findlay, born 10 February 1831,
6) - Mary Findlay, born 13 May 1833,
7) - James Findlay, born 22 January 1836, died 8.11.1917.
All were born in the Parish of Fenwick, Strathclyde, Scotland.
Following their marriage in Kilmarnock in 1862, James & Margaret immigrated the same year to New Zealand on the ship "The Grassmere". Brothers John and Charles Findlay, had already come to New Zealand and were farming at North Taieri, Dunedin, where they were joined by James in 1862.
Do you have any of the above names in your Family Tree?
Best wishes from New Zealand,
Logan Shortt.

Wilson Family in Kilmarnock lived at 11 west Netherton?
- Kilmarnock
I am currently looking for my Father in law's family. We know that his family, Mother Margaret (Whittaker) and Father John as well as his siblings,(he said there were 13 of them) of which we can only account for a few..Andrew, Bunty, Edward were all in Kilmarnock and his Father died in the 1970's. Dad's name is John (Iain) William Wilson born May 12 1925 and he was a POW during WW2. Dad came to Canada in the late 1940's early 50's. We had been told that it was because the family perished during WW2 but we now know that is not the case. We don't really care why he came, but would like to know about the family that obviously survived the war. The trouble is Dad has Alhziemers, and was recently diagnosed with Inopperable Lung Cancer. He talks of his brothers and sisters, but we have never met any of them. My husband and his siblings have spent their whole lives thinking they were the last of the line, and now we find out that they may actually have family!
So if you know of any Wilson's (Andrew, or Drew died in May of 2003 but have had no luck in finding family), please contact us. We would like to let Dad know that he does still have someone out there, before it is too late.
