McCutcheon farmers and miners
- Dailly
My McCutcheon / McHutchon ancestors in Dailly parish lived at Parkavice or Parkarice, according to the 1841 Census. Does anyone know how I can track down this house? They were farmers but probably worked in the local coal mines. In 1850, there was a fire at one of the Dailly pits that burned for the next 50 years. Perhaps coincidentally, my ancestor William Alexander McCutcheon left the village in 1850 for another mining area, Wrexham in Wales, with his wife and 5 daughters. His son later made a pile selling coal.

The Den, Barkip

In the 1940`s there was an old house at Barkip on the road between Beith and Dalry, opposite a co-op store (Danny in charge). In the 1850`s I believe a Hill family lived there. In the late 1800`s Mary (Hamilton) and Peter Holmes raised their family in it. I don`t know when they moved in but Jessie (Hill) and James Holmes were there in the 1940`s. If this brings back any memories, I would love to hear from you. Thanks.
