Ancestors of Charles Muir CAMPBELL, b. 1(?) Sep 1795 - Ayrshire (AYR, County, Scotland)
Charles Muir Campbell was supposedly born 1 Sep 1795 in Scotland, then taken to the West Indies as an infant by his parents, orphaned at an early age, taken to New Jersey USA by his "uncle James CAMPBELL", and "put to school" at Basking Ridge NJ (possibly around June 1798). He may have had family in Penns Neck NJ. He married first Agness SCHENCK, and later Rebecca F. ELY, a widow. He died around 12 Oct 1874 and is buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, Sangamon County, IL, USA. We are trying to determine where in Scotland (or Ireland?) his parents came from and who they were. There is apparently and "uncle James CAMPBELL" who brought him to the USA as an orphan. Family lore is that he was heir to some money and his life was in danger in the West Indies (probably Jamaica, but possibly other islands like Grenada or Demerara). I'm concentrating on two likely areas within Scotland - the Ayr and Muirkirk area - because there were some marriages betweens MUIR's and CAMPBELL's around 1750. And also around the Glasgow area - because there is coincidental (?) names that crop up in the letters of the poet, Thomas Campbell. His parents were both CAMPBELL's, (from different lines). The poet's mother was sister to a Daniel CAMPBELL. The poet's father had two other brothers, one in the West Indies, the other a respected religious leader in Virginia in the USA. Charles Muir Campbell (CMC) attended the "Classical Academy" (or "Brick Academy") taught by the Rev FINLEY - who was connected to Rev John WITHERSPOON, which also connects back to the poet, Thomas CAMPBELL. Since Thomas CAMPBELL grew up in the Glasgow area, that is an area of interest as well. I'm hoping to identify any birth, marriage, letters, or other records which would help me identify the parents of Charles Muir Campbell or his uncle, James CAMPBELL. Thanks! Greg
