Wm & JNO Don & Co. Manufacturer, Forfar - Forfar
My neighbour has a silver-coloured medal presented to her grandfather, JAMES LAMONT, in 1899. It was presented by Wm & JNO Don & Co. Manufacturer in 1899, according to an inscription around the edge of it. It says in the centre "Science Art and Industry. Inscribed in tiny letters around the edge at the bottom is "A. Kirkwood & Sons, Sc" It is in a box which indicates it was made by Alex Kirkwood & Son Medallist 9 St. James Square, Edinburgh Est. 1826. Des. (presumably "designed") by J. Young. Thus the box explains the tiny writing around its base. My neighbour believes her grandfather was an engineer- he later had connections with the Titanic, sailing with it for part of its maiden voyage but leaving when it left, I think she said, Ireland??? Can anyone provide any information about Wm & JNO Don & Co? eg- as to WHO they were? What was their business? Any idea WHY JAMES LAMONT would have been presented with this medal? Do you know anyone presented with a similar medal? If so, any details would be appreciated. I wonder whether Alex Kirkwood, who I believe are still in existence today, would have any relevant details of the creation of the medal. Elizabeth
