Cowie
- Dundee
Daniel Ross Cowie was an Iron-Borer living in Dundee at about 1900. Married a Clementina Leroy from Armentieres,France, sometime after 1885. Believed to have met her whilst working for the Caledonian Engineering company who set up the Boiler making works there in 1885.Children Annette (my grandmother) and possibly Louis. Annette became an orphan in 1910 at the age of 7 and was looked after by the Nuns on the Law in Dundee. She thought that she was split up from her brother Louis at that time but only had vague recollections about him. Anyone know a Louis Cowie, born sometime from 1885 to 1901?

Blacks in Dundee
- Dundee
My husband's grandmother was Janet Johnston, born 1880 somewhere on the brim of Dundee. The town of her orginal birth begins with an 'A' but we are not sure which, as she generally just said she was from Dundee. She was a dark-skinned black woman. Does anyone know of any communities of black people that lived around Dundee in the late 19c. I do not believe she was a slave, and so we are fascinated to know how she got to be born in this region.
She migrated to the USA circa 1900, and we believe the spelling of her name to be Janet Johnston, however, in the US it was pronounced Jeanette Johnson (without 't').

Henry PITTOCK & Sarah MCINTOSH
- Dundee
My great great grandfather was Henry PITTOCK and according to the 1881 census he was born around 1850 in Milford, Yorkshire which I take to be now called South Milford near Leeds. In 1873 in Liverpool he married Sarah MCINTOSH (born c1853 in Dundee but I have no other info on her) and in 1881 they were living in Barrow in Furness before moving to Motherwell in Scotland with their (at that time) 5 children around 1887. The children were James (c1874), Sarah Ann (my great grandmother - 1875), Betsy (c1877), Henry (c1879), Isabella (c1880) all born in Barrow in Furness, and finally Donald (1887) born in Motherwell. Donald died in 1939 in hospital in Glasgow, and Sarah Ann died in 1962 in Motherwell. Both parents had died by 1939.
Henry was listed on census as an Iron Smelter or possibly Steel Hammerman. Family legend has it that they were of Romany origin but that is extremely doubtful at best.
Does anyone have any relevant information on any of the PITTOCK or MCINTOSH families? Thanks in advance.
