Center/Senter, Peter, Brodie, Scott - New Deer
Alexander Center and his wife Mary Brodie had in the 1841 census a border, the stable boy George Peter, who that year married their daughter Margaret Center at Montquhitter 26 July,1841. Is there any sign of the Peter's family still living around there? Was a cousin of Sir Walter Scott?. She and George had to marry in her fathers kitchen because she admired Florence Nightingale so, she became a nurse and midwife,,,and this was disgraceful in those days. (hand written notes by her daughter). She married her fathers stable boy. It's said that her father was a school teacher/minister. Margaret continued her nursing and midwifery in San Fransisco. Many of the families records were destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and subsequent fire. There were at least two children left in Scotland. The favorite song of your great grandmother (Margaret Center-Peter) as sung by my mother (Jessie Peter-Mignon) to me (Aunt Helen Leonie Mignon) written to Helen Janet Schultzberg Hickey and in the possession of her son Gary Joseph Hickey: The Ingleside Tis fair to see the morning breeze Like a bonfire frae the sea Tis rare to see the burnies kiss The lip of the flowery lea And fair it is on greenhill side where hums the busy bee but fairer rarer finer fair is the ingleside for me Glens may be gilt wi' gowens fair and the birds may fill the lea and meadows hae all the scented ware that a summers growth can gae But the country hearth where chronies meet Wi the darling o'our eye that macks to me a world complete O' the ingleside for me. I would love to know the tune/melody to this.
