Firth family, Holmfirth area - Holmfirth
I am researching the Firth family who originate from the Holmfirth area (perhaps there is a clue in the name?). Does anyone have any information on the family, or anything which might help me to trace earlier generations? Many thanks if you can help!

Coldwell family history - Holmfirth
My aim is to the establish the entire worldwide family tree for the COLDWELL/COULDWELL surname. For various reasons this aim may not be acheived but I hope to get close to it. In the future I may use DNA techniques to confim linkages between sub-trees.
I hope to extend this to the present day and wider afield by exchanging information with living Coldwells.
Please contact me if you wish to find out more about the Coldwell family.
Variants The main variant of Coldwell is Couldwell and this variant tends to
occur mostly in the southern part of Yorkshire. Occasionally Coldwell also gets
transformed into a Cowgill which is confusing because the name exists in its own
right unconnected with Coldwell. I have also found a few Coldhill as variants of
Coldwell. Occasionally there are other variants arising from minor changes in
spelling but these are few in number and are usually apparent by tracing the
particular family backwards to find the original name.
Origin of the surname In West Yorkshire, the locality Coldwell in Austonley near
Holmfirth, west of Huddersfield, has given rise to the name Coldwell, which has
ramified in the Holmfirth area and subsequently spread throughout the old West
Riding of Yorkshire. Today there remains a farm and a lane named Coldwell in
Austonley (now called Homebridge).
Historical occurrences The earliest reference I have found to Coldwell is in 1376
to John de Coldewelle involved in a dispute with John de Malleshedde at Austonley
(West Riding Manorial Court Records). In the same year Thomas de Coldewelle
surrendered a cottage and five roods of land in Wooldale, Holmfirth,
Huddersfield. Several other early references exist including this interesting
item in 1447/8 at Scholes, Holmfirth: a bye-law that Agnes Coldewelle should
repair and mend the common way at New Mill near Hudderfield. This is the first
evidence of a connection with the new corn mill (new pre 1447!). Coldwell (now
Coldhill) Lane leads to the mill site in New Mill. There are many more early
references to Coldwell in the Wakefield records.
The only famous Coldwell I have encountered is John Coldwell Bishop of Salisbury
in the late C16.
Distribution of the name In the 1881 census for England and Scotland, there were
1311 individuals named Coldwell and 261 named Couldwell. The number in Yorkshire
was 1048 and 61 in Lancashire with the balance of 463 spread around England and
Scotland. In Yorkshire the greatest numbers of Coldwell families were in the Poor
Law unions of Huddersfield, Wortley (Penistone area), Barnsley, Sheffield and
Ecclesell Bierlow (west of Sheffield). Other Coldwell/Couldwell families were
scattered thoughout the UK. Since 1881 there has been some migration around the
UK but the highest concentrations remain in the Yorkshire region.
Data To date (2006) I have information on about 7000 individuals mainly in the UK
area from the year 1901 to earlier times. So far I have been able to construct
several Coldwell regional sub-trees.

Holmfirth Parish Records - Holmfirth
I wonder if anyone has access to the Parish Records for Holmfirth?
I would be really grateful to find out if there is a record of a Nancy or Nanny Downs born around 1812. The IGI Batch numbers for Holmfirth start in 1813, frustratingly. I am wondering if she could be the daughter of William Downes and his wife Betty.
Nancy married Joseph Cartwright in Mottram in Longdendale, Cheshire but she claimed to have been born in Holmfirth.
Joseph may also have been from there as there are a few Cartwrights listed.

Harold Kaye - Father of Sheila (Morris) - Holmfirth
Harold Kay(e)used to work for Baddeley's in Holmfirth in the 1950's. Lived in a large house in New Mill Road I am told and had a daughter called Sheila; I don't know if there were other children. Sheila's name could be Morris now as I beleive she married someone called Roy Morris. Sheila used to live in Meltham area of Huddersfield and worked at David Brown Tractors in the 1960's I believe in the typing pool. She would be probably mid 60's now. I will explain my connection with the family privately but I would like to have a photograph of him. I know my mother (now deceased) used to have one but it was lost. If anyone knows of this family or can help me in any way please contact me. Many thanks

Thomas was born in Honley on 2 December 1878, the eldest child of William and Evelyn Emma (nee Sutton) ASTLE, a year after their marriage. He had a sister, Mabel, born in Watford in 1889. In 1901 census Thomas was a groom in Bolney, Sussex, and in 1903 he married Alice Caroline BATCHELOR in Chertsey. I believe him to be the Thomas Astle who was my grandfather. The marriage was a disaster and ended in divorce in 1936. Any further information would be greatly appreciated.
