James Dowd
- Doncaster
UK Censuses of 1871 and 1881 list my gggrandfather James and wife Ceciley Dowd in 2 Skinyard, Doncaster.James is not in 1881 so presume he died between 1871 and 1881. James Dowd , their grandson and my grandfather ( age 8)is listed in 1881 as living with his grandmother Ceciley at 2 Skinyard while his father , also James b. 1842,,and mother, Catherine(nee Clark), are shown as living in Golcar UK.Believe that Ceciley died in 1883 at which time James and Catherine moved to Jermyn, PA , USA to work in coal mines. There was a daughter Margaret b. 1837, to the elder James and Ceciley shown in the 1851 census when they were in Latchford , Cheshire , Lancashire.Tried to find burial records in Doncaster for the elders but the old cemetery records did not list them. They were Catholic and born in Carrick-on-Shannon , Ireland.Would like to know were they buried in Doncaster and where and is there any record of Margaret. When they moved to USA, they restored the O' to the name and are shown as O'Dowd here.

Looking for Albert Scott
- Doncaster
Hello, My G grandfather was Albert Ernest Scott who married Lily Gertrude Badley in Sept 1909 (I found this record). They lived at 80 St John's Rd, Balby, Doncaster & had 4 sons; Charles (1910 my grfth), Ralph (1916), Arthur (1917) & Roy (1922). I know Albert was deceased when my grangparents married in Sept 1940 but have no idea of his dates. On my grandfather's birth certificate it states that Albert was a telegraph engineer. He may be the 12 yr old Albert on the 1901 census (RG13, piece 4413, folio 60, p3, sched 20) but it's just a guess. I can't seem to find a birth or death which could be him. Can anyone give me some leads on this search. Many thanks.

Stephenson
- Doncaster
I'm new to this computer stuff--but I did some searching in regard to the history of my last name 20 years ago (doing it the hard way, micro film, regular mail etc). AT that time, what I seemed to find out was -- my G.G.G. Grandfather William Stephenson was born at Doncaster - parish records state: children of Wm & Alice Stephenson - Henry baptised May 1813, William Sept 21st 1814 & Edwin Carter in 1816 (don't know what happened to him) The parents here are found in Cantley parish: Wm Stevenson married Alice Carter, Jan 21, 1811 - same parents seem to have died real young (at Doncaster) I know from records that Henry went to Cantley parish near Branton (just south east of Doncaster) the 1861 census show him married and working as an Agricultural Labourer for his uncle Wm Carter - Henry died Dec 22, 1882. Later census show him at 10 Doncaster Road, farmer of 8 acres - his children were Eliz. & Eleaner & son Thomas. Brother William seems to have got moved over to around Hull (east riding) and is found in the Cottingham parish, marrying Mary Scott Feb 16 1838 - same parish records show 6 children born to them - although in the 1851 census they are found in Stoneferry, Sutton parish. At this point in 1854 or 55 they came to Canada (near Hamilton Ontario - later moving to Strathroy Ont.). I believe 2 other families came with them (relatives): Edward Nicholls & Wm Withernwick. Looking to further my search -- I wonder if Wm who died young at Doncaster was born else where ?? Note: the first one born to William & Mary Stephenson after they came to Canada (Edward) went back to England for a trip in the summer of 1882 - he was going again in 1886, but died in the spring of same year -- his death notice stated that he thought he was going to marry in Eng. but he never made it ... SAD.
