Doncaster Common.
- Doncaster Common
The Town Fields have been referred to by this name since at least the 1920's. Whatever confusion exists was probably caused when some counties were deleted, others renamed or reshaped, and YORKSHIRE was divided into areas which had no historical relevance whatever, and the RIDINGS were made obsolete. Hence the Town Fields were in the West Riding (now part of South Yorkshire).
Incidentally, the land was mostly used for producing wheat and other cereals during WW2.

Drax,Camblesforth,Cowick
- Drax
From 1851 census. A). Lazenby family were resident in St Phillips area of Sheffield in 1850s and prior. In 1851, George was 46 years old and lived at 9 Jehu Lane. He was a tailor his business was at 2 Morpeth St. I did trace that part of tree back to Snaith/ Drax / Cowick area - But this appears to be on the cusp of West, South and East Yorkshire and records were not so well documented in 1984 and are dispersed at differing places today.
B). George the tailor's parents (I suspect) were George Lazenby - Camblesforth in Drax area and Hannah Hague (Syke House - in same area). Their banns Drax - are missing for 1804 - and the trail stops there. The 'folio' ref I found in 1984/85 was P50 - in the IGI possibly ???
Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Robert

Does anyone know anything about the Drighlington football team known as the Codders? My great-grandfather Percy Aspden was their goalkeeper in (I think) the 1920s, and I think they were associated with the Painters Arms pub. Any info would be appreciated: did they play in a league?
