Also living there were two brothers, James Henry WILSON (b.24.04.1871) and Arthur WILSON (b.1873) who are described as 'nephews' to Thomas and Hannah (therefore we think Hannah was nee SMITH). Murby Holmes' father JONAS HOLMES Windhill, Idle Yorkshire - (Bradford - Yorkshire, West Riding)
Murby Holmes is my great grandfather born in 1865 in Idle, Shipley, Yorkshire. His mother was Ann Holmes (nee Murby) and his father was JONAS HOLMES - this is the person I am looking for! Jonas Holmes was born about 1832 in Idle (I think - the information about him on various censuses seems to change). At the age of ten in 1841 he was not living with his parents, but with a family (not called Holmes) in Idle. Likewise, ten years' later he is described as a lodger with another family in Idle, no 'Holmes' relatives in sight! His marriage certificate to Ann in 1857 at Manningham Parish Church in Bradford does not state who his father was - the area is crossed out. Jonas fathered three children with Ann including my great granddad Murby, but Jonas died aged 39 in 1871 of 'general debility' and the coroner of Yorkshire, Thomas Taylor had to speak at his inquest, which all sounds rather dramatic. I am very curious to find out who Jonas' parents were. Perhaps he was illegitimate and his mother was a 'Holmes' or, perhaps his parents both died young? Did he even know his father - if he didn't enter him on his marriage certificate? Was he even baptised (I can't find any official birth record for him)? He doesn't seem to have any siblings, nor is he appearing in the birth/ baptism records for Idle Parish Church (which are on-line). His death is recorded in these records though. I don't know how to find out about him as he was born before 1837. Is it possible to find out about the inquest into his death held on 21 June 1871?
Any help would be very much appreciated. I have good records for Murby Holmes onwards but I am drawing a blank at Jonas and would like to find out a bit more about this man's life. A humble labourer and 'engine tenter' who died very young in unforeseen circumstances but, without whom I wouldn't be here enjoying life in the 21st century.
Thank you
