SMITH: Thomas, William and John. St Leonards by the Sea / Bexhill - Bexhill
Looking to trace information / descendants of brothers William & Thomas Smith - father John. mother unknown. It is unknown if there are any other siblings. Thomas is the father of Ernest Smith b. 1849 at St Leonards on the Sea, to mother Harriet (nee Elphick/Elpic.)
WILLIAM was born c. 1811/12 supposedly in the Bexhill area and married sometime between 1838 -1849/50 to CAROLINE (unknown) who was a British Subject born in France about 1820/21. In 1861 census they were living in Cobbs Hill, in the parish of Bexhill with their 5 children : Samuel - 11yrs old; Tom - 8yrs; Charles 5yrs; Luther 3 yrs; & baby Caroline 8 mths. Their nephew, Ernest 11yrs also resided with them (parents Thomas & Harriet being in Australia by this time). It is unknown if there were other later children. Williams occupation was listed as Miller Loader. It is thought that one or more of Williams children may have accompanied their cousin Ernest to Australia sometime in the early 1870s for gold digging. Have been unable to locate a birth cert/record or marriage cert for William to date due to common names & unknown mother. Nothing is known of Williams descendents as yet, whether some/all stayed in Australia or if they came at all!!
THOMAS was born c. 1815 also supposedly in Bexhill area. He married Harriet ELPHICK in 1849. At that time he was living in Bohemia Terrace, in the Parish of St Mary Magdalen (adjacent to St Leonards on the Sea). His occupation was listed as agricultural labourer on marriage cert & 1851 census. When Ernest was born, his parents were listed as living in a cottage near Magdalen Tollgate, St Leonards on the Sea. Any information on exactly where that tollgate was situated (street/ landmark?)would be appreciated. In the 1851 census, he was listed as living at 8 Bohemia Terrace, St Mary Magdalen with wife Harriet & son Ernest (1 yr old). They are thought to have left England sometime after the christening of Ernest in 1854 at Droitwich. Their next known English residence is the Alma Villas, St Mary in the Castle, (Hastings), after their return from Australia. They both died there -Thomas in 1886 & Harriet in 1882. Ernest remained in Australia & is my ggf, he is assumed to have been an only child but subsequently had 5 children of his own. Unable to find birth record/ cert for Thomas to date due to common names & unknown mother. Also unable to find information about Harriet Elphick see entry under ELPHICK/ELPIC Hooe / Hastings / Battle.
JOHN SMITH is thought to have been born around mid 1780s, possibly in the St Clements Parish or somewhere in the Hastings area. His occupation was listed as labourer on the marriage cert of Thomas in 1849 & his age is thought to be around late 50s or early 60s, given that Thomas was 34 yrs old at the time of his marriage. There is some suspicion that there may have been some military service possibly in France / India an old military medal and the strong tradition of military service in my family suggests this, but there is not enough other information to narrow down the possibilities of all the John Smiths!! Unable to pinpoint any birth / death /marriage records for John to date due to common names & unknown wife/mother.

Frank Morris - Bexhill
I am looking for any information on a Frank Morris, born Nov 6 1892 Haddocks Hill Bexhill England. He was age 8 in Bexhill Sussex, his Mothers' name was Annie, in 1901 she would've been 37 years of age, his Wife's name Hilda. I have additional information he lived at 5 Simpson Cottages (?)-of which I cannot find any information. This Frank Morris is my Great Grandfather whom was in WWI, repeatedly inured he was not allowed to go back into action (stubborn one he was) which rendered him in the Military Band upon which he composed and orchestrated marches for (Step Lively my favourite piece ~ we have his original scores) - and also played in front of the King. He later moved to Canada Manitoba and joined the NWMP as Drum major-he was the only one in history allowed to wear his original regalia from the Military as drum major in the NWMP (North West Mounted Police) now called RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police).
If anyone has any more information about Frank Morris or family history, I would be delighted to hear from you!
Thanks so much.

THE PAGES, PAGES LODGE & PAGES COTTAGES - Bexhill
I am seeking any information on The Pages house, The Pages Lodge and the Pages Cottages which in 1878 were south of St Mark's Church and close to the London Brighton and South Coast railway line branch. I think my family of Pages may have been connected to these houses. They certainly were the only people to occupy the main house during the five census from 1851 to 1901. For the other four census the main house was unoccupied. Does anyone have any information on these buildings? Are they still there? If not what is there today. I'm Australian so haven't a hope at getting there to see. Thank you Ann.

ELPHICK/ELPIC, Harriet Bexhill/ Hooe / Battle - Bexhill
Looking to trace information on the family of HARRIET ELPHICK born c 1820/21, who married Thomas SMITH at St Mary in the Castle, (Hastings) in 1849. Marriage cert names father as CHARLES, occupation- labourer.(mother not stated). It is unknown if she had any siblings. A search of English census 1841 finds a Harriet Elphick 20 yrs old- at the Chequers Inn, in the town of Battle. Right age & general area. On her 1849 marriage cert. Harriets age is given as 32 and in the 1851 census Harriets age is listed as 33yrs and her birthplace as Bexhill so the Battle Harriet is probably our girl. However, looking for CHARLES ELPHICK in the Hastings general area has caused some angst. In Hooe, 1841 is a Charles Elphick(45yrs old), wife Jane & 6 children. His occupation is ag. labourer BUT he also has a daughter Harriet -11 yrs old!. Could there be 2 in the same family?? Can anyone researching Elphick clear this up or suggest another Charles Elphick. It may be possible that Harriet was in fact NOT born in Bexhill, but somewhere else like Droitwich, where her son ERNEST Smith was christened in 1854. Apparently Elphicks were not all that common.

Whitelock 1885 - Bexhill - St Leonards - Bexhill
Hi, I am looking for information on my Grand Father Charles George Whitelock said to be born 14th Feb 1885. There is little known about his early life other then we know he went to Canada at the age of 8 before returning and joning the Royal Navy as a boy under training at Devonport at the age of 15, his birth place is recorded as Bethell-on-sea, Sussex but we know this was Bexhill. So far we have been unable to prove who his Mother or Father was other then George Whitelock deceased is written on his marraige certificate. We know there was a George Whitelock born about 1868 in Stainsby Street St Leonards and also his Father of the same name born 1844 Wakefield in Yorkshire which we have taken from the census but not sure if there is any link. We are pretty sure grandfather was illegitimate and had a half brother and two sisters who emergrated to Canada who had the surname of Spray. It would be nice to pin down an address or place in Bexhill. I would welcome any information or pointers.
Kind Regards
Richard

NELSON Frederick George Talmage 1939-40 death - Bexhill
I am hoping someone can help me find the date and place of my grandfather's death, having failed miserably with BMD index records. I know that he was living at The Corner House, Dorset Road, Bexhill-on-Sea from December 1939, and I believe he died between this date and June 1940 because his son, my father, told me he "couldn't come back" from BEF war-duty to be at the funeral. I have contacted Bexhill Cemetry but with no luck. Frederick George Talmage Nelson was born in Teheran, Persia on 07 Jun 1880, was married there and was a Bank Manager with the Imperial Bank of Persia from 1907 to 1930. After he left their service he seems to have fallen on hard times. He was married to a Kathleen Howard Cane who lived in Hove and Worthing, and she died in 1968. If anybody can help me track down any information, I would be most grateful.
