| William Bretton Lawyer Burgess - (Burgess Hill - Sussex)
I am searching for ancestors of William Bretton who arrived in Maryland on 12th January, 1637 together with his wife Mary Nabb and son William aged four born in 1633. Mother's parent's
Thomas Nabbs and his wife and 3 servants John Mansell,Richard Harris, and James Jelfe. William Bretton, was well known to the Calvert family ( Lord Baltimore) and was persuaded to come to the Provence
He must have been a man of some means as he transported a number of people, was well educated and was referred to as: Gentleman and the fact that he came to Maryland (in America) to take up a post of Clerk of the Council Provincial Court, Judge Coroner and Lord of the Manor, was borne out by the fact that he attended his first General Assembly less than 2 weeks after arriving and was invited to take up the post by the Governor. On death of his wife he married again and one daughter born of this second marriage
PS his home in Maryland, High Hoyland He called"Little Bretton"
So background information on this early voyager to America, and one of the earliest to hold land in New York on Stretton Island
is interesting for all of us, whether he was from our wing of the family or not.
All my best
