Harry Rivers - Croydon
Harry Rivers Iram was born on 30 Oct 1846 in Croydon, England. Before 1873 he was a merchant seaman. The story has been told in the family that as a British merchant seaman, Harry Rivers got into a disagreement at sea with one of the officers and "jumped ship." It is believed he simply ran away when the ship docked in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and never returned, but no specific details have been found. Before 1890 he was railroad man with the Western Counties Railroad in Nova Scotia, Canada. While serving as a brakeman near Lake Jessie, he was badly injured trying to couple a locomotive to a train of flat cars. He was jammed between the tender and front car. He was taken to his residence nearWhitehouse's Corner, and the engine returned to Yarmouth for medical assistance for him. The services of Dr. J. L. R. Webster were engaged, and he was attended to. He recovered very slowly from the injury, but never fully regained his health. He later filled the position as station agent at Brazil Lake for a period of time. He died on 30 Aug 1890 in Annapolis, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, Canada. His place of death has also been shown as Annapolis Royal, also in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia. He was buried after 30 Aug 1890 in South Ohio Hillside Cemetery, South Ohio, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was also known as Harry Rivers Iram or Henry Rivers Iram. Around 1873, following his untimely departure from a British merchant vessel, he changed his name to avoid being returned to his ship and likely prosecurtion. It was at this time that he changed his name to Harry Rivers Iram, though some sources show his first name as Henry. It is thought he picked out his new name from the Bible, by opening it and pointing to a verse where the Bible opened. It was Genesis 36:43, and referred to the clans of Edom, one of which was Iram. Spouse: Marian Axele (Mary) Cann. Harry Rivers Iram and Marian Axele (Mary) Cann were married on 19 Oct 1874 in Deerfield Baptist Church, Deerfield, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, Canada. They were married by Rev. Jason A. Stubbert. Children were: Henry Charles Iram, Cynthia Iram, Adelbert Rivers Iram, Jennie Mae Iram, Nellie Iram, Marion Iram, Frank Stanley Iram, Elma Lillian Iram.
