Arden King Chorley Gardner - Haregate
From a box of solicitors' documents bought at auction, papers referring to Emma and Ellen Arden. Ellen Arden had an illegitimate daughter Ellen by a Joshua Chorley around 1830. He left a bequest for her in his will, but clearly did not make it absolutely clear who he was referring to. So the papers refer to a case in chancery (successful) to claim the annuity. "Hannah Gardner of Seedley near Pendleton in the County of Lancaster the Wife of Thomas Gardner of the same place Warehouseman aged forty nine years Maketh oath and saith that she is the Aunt of Ellen King formerly Ellen Arden of Salford who is the mother of the said Emma Arden . . . and the said Emma Arden is the illegitimate daughter of the said Ellen King . . . and was at the date of the Will of the said Joshua Chorley of Haregate of the parish of Leek ..."
