Mottershaw/Mothershaw/Moddershaw/Mottashaw - Ashley
I am researching ancestors in Ashley, Staffs (the Moreton Say sub-district of Market Drayton) between 1811 and 1881. The surname was spelled in a number of ways (3 of these in the heading).
Robart and Mary Mothershaw had 5 children between 1812 and 1819: Msry, James, Robart, Elizabeth and William (Robart & William died
in infancy. James married Martha, then Mary and had 4 children: Mary, Elizabeth, Henry and James
(the last died in infancy). James was an agricultural labourer and lived all his life in Ashley. The family surname seems to have its origin in Staffs, possibly connected to Mothershall Hall, and was uncommon outside Staffs, Shropshire and Derbyshire. The Mottashaw variant took hold in my family but by the mid-20th century we were the only family with that spelling of the name - and there is now only one boy to carry it on! But where are the Staffordshire Mottershaws we must be related to? Please contact Janet

Snape/Cheadle - Aston-By-Stone
I am looking for details of an Elizabeth Cheadle who married my gggrandfather John Vernon in Trent Vale, Staffordshire in 1904. She may have been born in Aston by Stone to Sarah Cheadle. The marriage certificate gives her father as Charles Cheadle but have been unable to find any record of this in records or census. No mother is recorded on the marriage certificate for either party nor any age. In 1861 census an Elizabeth Cheadle, daughter of Sarah,(Snape formerly Cheadle, married to Charles 1865)is living in Trentham with Charles Snape & his family, including daughter Emma. This Emma was still unmarried in 1901, living with her father, Charles, & Rose (Snape) Cheadle as she did in 1881 & 1891. Elizabeth had a sister/half sister Emma Snape who witnessed the marriage to John. Elizabeth died in 1941, possibly in Blackpool. Emma & Elizabeth kept boarding houses in Blackpool & Colwyn Bay, Wales, possibly in the late 1930s. They lived together after the death of John in 1912. The only Emma Snape/Elizabeth Cheadle link I can find is the one above. Anyone with more information?

Elizabeth Cheadle - Aston-By-Stone
Was mistaken in previous entry re Elizabeth Cheadle. It is 1871 not 1861 census that has her (age 11) at The Old Road, Trentham with her mother Sarah Snape (previously Cheadle) & Charles Snape, his mother Elizabeth and his children (with Sarah & his previous wife Catherine), Samuel, William, Charles and Emma. In 1861 an Elizabeth Cheadle,1 year old, was at Pool Row, Burton with her grandparents, Edward and Elizabeth, their adult children, Ann, Benjamin and William, and various other family members.

|
Rose Snape Cheadle - Aston-By-Stone
Have done some research on Snape Cheadle family through the internet & have discovered a family tree that gives Elizabeth Cheadle (born 1859-60) as mother of Rose Snape Cheadle. Elizabeth Cheadle and Emma Snape were half sisters. Emma Snape's father was Charles Snape. The mother of both girls was Sarah Cheadle. She married Charles Snape in 1865. They lived in The Old Road Trentham. The 1891 census shows Rose living with Charles, Sarah & Emma, 1901 gives Rose with Charles & Emma in Trentham. Emma still listed as unmarried. No Elizabeth Cheadle but a possibility that she had died or she was in service at another address. There are some possibilites in 1901 census.

Mellor family in Audley - Audley
Thomas Mellor married Ann Mellor ( yes, that was her maiden name as well) by licence on 30 November 1783 in Audley. Does anyone have information on either of these people ? They might have been the parents of William Mellor, born 21 July 1785 but the birth was in Cornwall. William married Grace Rapson, also of Cornwall, but I am keen to understand any link between these people. Why should Thomas move to Cornwall ? Or indeed who were the parents of Thomas Mellor and Ann Mellor - and was there a s reason for the marriage by licence ?
