I am looking for any information on the Barber Family. In the 1881 census I found James Barber born in Castle Cary abt 1847 and his occupation was a Horse Hair MF Dyer. He was married to Elizabeth born abt 1844 in Castle Cary. They had 4 children Elizabeth born abt 1867 in Castle Cary, James born abt 1869 in Castle Cary, Thomas born about 1873 in Castle Cary (my great great grandfather) and Rosina born about 1876 in Castle Cary.

George Henry Groves

My Great Grandfather, George Henry Groves was born in Castle Cary abt 1868/70. He married Elizabeth Ann Tucker in 1898.(No father recorded on certificate) The only records I can find is:- George Groves aged 3 on 1871 census, grandson to Martha Cary. I know he went to Wales for a while as a coal miner before returning to get married at North Cadbury. His Mother may have been Jane Groves, daughter of George and Mary Groves. Can anyone help.

I am looking for information regarding my great grandmother's family. Her name was Charlotte Elizabeth Martin and was born in Catcott about 1844 or 5. Her father, Jonas Martin, was a blacksmith, born in Edington in 1811 and married Mary Jones in 1840. They had sons Anthony and Robert and daughters Eliza, Mary Ann, Elizabeth, Caroline and Charlotte. I think they are related to the Martins in Westzoiland. Charlotte married Robert Land and died in childbirth in 1884 leaving four small children. Anyone doing any research on this family? Anne was widowed and returned to Chaffcombe pregnant with their fifth child,John.Betsey,Robert,William and Thomas, who died young ,were all born in Merriott.I have a fair amount of information on these children from Census' but little on Ann before her marriage.

Earliest record is 1812 (marriage between Mary Veriod and Arthur Hull) Latest ref for Chaffcombe is 1870 PR record for christening of Arthur William Vine Veriott. I have all the census info and some PR info, but would be interested in any other refs.
Various family members lived around Chard until 1950s. Including Mary Ann Veriod died Forton Chard 1890 and John Veriod son of James and Patience lived in Chard until 1933

Here are my earliest entries; Samuel Hoskins (born 1730's) married to Hannah ?Dyer, c1766; children include a John Hoskins born c1767 married Susanna FORSEY c1789, Chard; children John, Hannah, Susanna 1, James, Joseph, Ann, Susanna 2, Martha.
John married Hannah VICKERY; Hannah Hoskins married Stephen HENLEY; James married Mary MARSH; Susanna 2 married Robert HENLEY.

James Stoodley m. Ann Manning in the 1840s. They had several children, one of which was Lily Stoodley b. 1882. She married John Cummings of Bridgwater in 1904. She had a sister Rose who went to live in Wales. Lily went to stay with her sister Rose in 1919 and whilst there gave birth of her only child Lilian. She later went to Birmingham to live. I am interested to hear from anyone researching the Stoodley family from Chard.

Hi,
I am trying to trace my family tree, I wanted to know if my greatgrandfather Henry John Sweetland born in Chard Someset I believe in 1892 has any syblings other than Gladys, what his fathers parents were called and what year he married Rose Lilian Boulton from St Giles in Reading (I think he had a brother in reading). He and his wife died in 1973 in Headington Oxford.

John Gosling, Elizabeth née Stembridge, and their children Mary, Elizabeth and William, left Chard in about 1848-50, emigrated to Jersey in the Channel Islands, and starting in a small way, gradually built a flourishing business in the carriage trade.
Mary marr. George William Bailey, Elizabeth marr. Robert Cox then James Stembridge & William marr. Sarah Hodder.
My grandfather, William Robert Gosling returned to London, England 1899-1900, marrying Mary Ann Maud Mitchell and lived here for the rest of his life, dying in 1946.
I know all the main events of their lives since 1851 but cannot seem to get any reliable information pre-1822.
