HOLTON PARK & HOLTON COTTAGE
- Holton
I have just discovered where my great great grandparents courted! John Walker married Maria Tookey in Exton, Rutland, but their courtship took place in the village of Holton, Oxfordshire.
John was working for William E Biscoe Esq, a local JP and landowner. John was a steward/gamekeeper, and was lodging in the village with a family called Messenger.
Maria was a lady's maid in the Norris household. Her employer was Henry Crawley Norris who was in the 8th Hussars.
Holton Park is now part of Wheatley Park School.
Love to hear from anyone whose ancestors were the Messengers, Biscoe's or Norris's of Holton, especially if you have any records on their servants in the 1860's or 1870's!

Burrows of Wheatley, Holton, Forrest Hill, Beckley
- Holton
I am a direct decendent of Burrows family who lived in the Forest Hill area 1711 onwards whose children expanded into Wheatley, Holton, Stanton St John, Beckley and the Otmoor villages, they then moved to Wheatfield in 1821 and William, James, Ann left for Australia in 1849 to work for Capt John Hepburn followed by Thomas and Mary Ann in 1851 in the great gold rush.
William was Millers 1780s, Thomas and son Bakers 1790-1830s and William/James were Farmers and Thomas was an orchardist.
The patriarchal heads are Francis 1680?, Thomas 1690? in Forest Hill early 1700s, sons William, James, Thomas were in Stanton, Holton, Beckley in the late 1700s and 1800s.
Some of the Burrows in Headington are also related ie. Southfield Farm. It is suspected a John Burrows about 1670-90 in Bicester is also related.
Spouses names include; Osborne, Rogers, Price, Mander, Parker, Bossingham, Duffell, Slade.
Main subject is tracking pre-1700 Burrows of Francis or Thomas.

John Messenger
- Holton
Hi,
I'm trying to prove that my grt grt grandfather John Messenger who lived most of his life and eventually died in Australia was the John Messenger who disappeared off the 1841 census in Holton Oxfordshire(son of William and Martha Messenger). I have found quite a bit of information at the Australian end and feel qite sure it is the same person, but would like some confirming information from the English end. His birth dates appear to be the same for day and month although there appears to be a little confusion through the family links here with the year. Holton records show baptised 21 march 1825, an local families believed he was born 12 march 1826. The birth and Baptised dates correspond as there was always a couple of weeks between birth and baptism. As for the one year difference,I believe the family may be wrong and holton registration correct. The only ship to Australia that I have found that carried a John Messenger of that age was on the "Wallace" in 1844(assisted passage) which corresponds with him disappearing off the census in 1841. On that shipping register if I have the correct John, it said he was 18 years, from oxfordshire, was protestant, reads only can't write, calling - groom (horse groom I believe)and is designated in his certificate as a farm servant. I believe he had to work for a man named Sutherland from Bunningyong in Victoria on arrival. Does anyone have any conflicting information or proving information from your side of the world. I feel fairly certain it is him but would be happy to hear any other opinions.
Thanks,
Tim
