Lie, Lye, Eyles, Lile, Lisle, Lyle
- Patrick Brompton
I have recently traced my family back to Henry LIE (bapt 26 May 1776 in Patrick Brompton), the son of John LIE and Isabell PARKER. They lived in Newton-le-Willows, a couple of miles south of Patrick Brompton. While looking through the Parish RegisterI also found a family named EYLES living in Hunton, a village north of Patrick Brompton. Both families tend to use the same given names, but I haven't found a relationship yet. Is anyone else tracing these families?
Henry would be my ggg grandfather. He moved to Swinton near Malton before 1800 where the surname became LILE or LISLE. Next generation, my gg grandfather George and his brother Henry became LYLEs.

William Clark (stonemason) born 1800
- Patrick Brompton
I am trying to trace my wife's family and I think this may be them in Patrick Brompton. In 1841 . . . CLARK William/40/Mason. . . CLARK Susan/30 . . . CLARK James/13 . . . CLARK Elizabeth/12 . . . CLARK Christopher/9 . . . CLARK Ann/8 . . . CLARK Susan/6 . . . CLARK William/4 . . . CLARK John/2
In 1851 . . . 28. . . . CLARK Susan/Head/W/44/Ag. Lab/Yks. Newton le Willows . . . CLARK Susan/dau/15/Yks. Patrick Brompton . . . CLARK William/son/14/Farmers Boy/Yks. Patrick Brompton . . . CLARK John/son/11/Scholar/Yks. Patrick Brompton
In 1861 . . . 31. . . CLARK Susan/Head/Widow/56/Ag. Lab./Yks. Newton le Willows . . . CLARK Christopher/son/UM/30/Groom/Yks. Patrick Brompton . . . CLARK Ann/dau/UM/28/Dressmaker/Yks. Patrick Brompton . . . We have a marriage cert for a William CLARK (farm labourer) - son of a deceased Stone Mason.
He married on 28 Nov 1864 in Darlington Reg Office to a Mary Ann Cook and both their ages were given as "21" . . . I suspect he was actually nearer the age of 27.
Unfortunately William died on 6 March 1871.
What I am really wanting to trace is the death of William Clark, the mason, born around 1800 who must have died in Patrick Brompton soon after 1841 (as Susannah didn't have any more children after the 1841 census !)

John Edward Fitzgerald Shortt
- Pickering
John Edward Fitzgerald Shortt was born on 30 June 1863 and baptised on 11 October 1863 in Templeharry Church, near Cloughjordan, County Tipperary, Ireland. His parents were John Shortt (1830-1905) and Harriett Anne Burriss (1843-1866) and they immigrated to New Zealand in 1865, apparently leaving their son to be brought up by his grandparents, Richard & Mary Burriss of Graffan, near Garrane, County Tipperary. Graduate records from Trinity College, Dublin, indicate that he obtained a BE degree in 1885 and an MA degree in 1888. The 1891 England Census shows that John E. F. Shortt, age 29, born in Ireland, was a Grammar School Headmaster living in Hallgarth, Pickering, Yorkshire. Also recorded, his wife, Anna A. Shortt, age 26, born in Ireland and William M. Burriss, a boarder age 24, born in Ireland, an Assistant School Master. The 1901 England Census shows John E. F. Shortt, age 37, a School Master and his wife, Anna A. Shortt, age 36, both born in Ireland, living in Hallgarth, Pickering, Yorkshire. Do any of the above names have a connection with your Shortt or Burriss family trees?
Best wishes from New Zealand,
Logan Shortt.
