EKE
- Saxthorpe
My ancestors lived in Saxthorpe and neighbouring Corpusty for several hundred years. Throughout the generations they intermarried with most local families (such as Jarvis, Bullock, Harrison, Hipperson, Dagless) including the Eke family. Here's the info I have on the Eke family. Any further info would be gratefully received!
Jonas Eke (b1803 Corpusty, died before 1881 census) had an illegitimate son called Jonas by Dorothy Margetson (b1805 Corpusty) in 1826 in Corpusty. Jonas Eke senior then married Martha (b1808 Corpusty) and had a family: Newton b.1840, Thomas b1842, Hannah b1844 and Samuel b1849. All born Corpusty. The illegitimate Jonas appears in census records as living with his father and using the name Eke.
In 1881, Samuel Eke andhis wife MaryAnn (b1855 hackney), new daughter Edith aged 5 months (born at Sevenoaks), sister Hannah and widowed mother, are living at Sevenoaks, Kent.
I can find no trace of Samuel's siblings in the 1881 census.
Roseanna Bullock was born in Saxthorpe in 1792. She had an illegitimate daughter called Sophia in 1817, then married William Eke at Corpusty in 1819. They had three children: John b1820, Maria b1824 and Hannah b1829 all in Corpusty. Roseanna was then widowed, and married Robert Platt...

BANHAM
- Shelfanger
Recently discovered my GG Grandfather came from Shelfanger. He was a Chelsea Pensioner for many years but seems to have moved around the country fairly well. I first came across his name when looking for my G Grandmothers birth in Etherley Durham. Her brothers BC states that Robert was a Jobbing Teacher. On his and my GG Grandmothers marriage certificates it says he was a Labourer on one and a retired farmer on the other....very confusing. I think it meant that he took what work he could. The only record for a Robert Banhams death with a wife called Margaret is in Salford Manchester in the late 1800's and he is listed then, again, as a retired soldier. I'm assuming that he and Margaret were actually living there at the time as later Margaret is to be found in Fleetwood living with my G Grandmother and taking in lodgers.
Very confusing family all round.
If anyone has any information about any Banham family in Shelfanger I would love to hear from you.
