Both father and son were soldiers and ended up as Chelsea Pensioners in Wollwich in Kent in the 1840 -1870s. Both were described as swarthy and sallow on soldiers records. James Howard b Hassingham c1787 (1851 farmer of 30 Acres in Beighton) had an older wife but seemingly fathered two children (William married Susannah Gilbert) by his dairymaid Maria Spooner finally marrying her in 1865 after the death of his poor wife. Her children gave all their children the middle name of Howard (inc my GGM Ellen Maria Howard Spooner). There was a 40 year age difference but he lived for four years after the wedding...it must have been the doorstep gossip for years but impressive that he actually married her. Any other info?
