Looking for any information on Jane TROW, born at Berriew, Mont between 1836 and 1839. She married Joseph Renfrey of Truro about 1855 and the family lived at Berriew until the tragic death of 2 daughters, aged 5 and 3. The family then moved to Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire.

Eliza in Bettws (not sure which one its likely to be) Montgomery 1855. William proving elusive at moment, says he was born Welshpool, but can't pickhim up. Can anyone help. Am based in Chester. Brees And Gwillim Families - Caersws
Matthew (born Llanwnog)and Anne (born Llanavan-fawr) were married at Caersws in 1813, and had a son Thomas (in 1819) who later became innkeeper at the Lion Inn, Llandinam, around 1870. His wife and he are buried in Llandinam churchyard, having died in 1874 and 1892 respectively. Daughter was Mary Jane Breese (the official spelling of the name by this time), born around 1850. More on the Brees/Breese/Gwillim families, please.

JONES of Carno, Montgomeryshire - Carno
Information required on the birth and death of Jonathan JONES born Carno about 1848-51. His father was William Jones a tailor. Later Jonathan became a tailor and moved to Taliesin, Cardiganshire with his wife Ann. They had 3 children, Richard,David William and Ann Jane. His wife died in 1887 and he subsequently married Catherine Ann Morgans and had a further 5 children John Owen, Mary Margaret, Thomas M., Elizabeth C. and James M. Believed to have died 1916 as a result of the death ofhis eldest son Richard at Mametz Wood on the Somme. Would like confimation of this. Descendants of David William are believed to have emigrated to Alberta, Canada in the 1920s or 30s. any information on trans-Atlantic cousins would also be welcome.

The Hurdley Family - Hurdley
It seems logical to suppose that this is where we originated (at least as Hurdleys), but the nearest I have got so far is Edward and Jane Hurdley who lived the Alberbury/Westbury area in the early 1700s. Early in the 19th century members of the family moved to Broseley, presumably in response to the arrival of the Industrial Revolution. Since then we've spread all over the place. Meddins - Llandinam
Richard and Margaret Meddins farmed Cwmllwydin, Llandinam from circa 1814, when John Meddins died, to 1855 when Richard died. Margaret went to live at Caersws as an annuitant in the 1881 census with her daughter Margaret Pryce, a widow and hergrandchildren, Matthew 13, Ann 9 and Mary Pryce 6.

Edward Griffiths b. ca 1809 in Llandinam, Montgomeryshire, m. Jane Morgan 8 Dec 1835 Llandinam, d. 5 Apr 1881 in Llandinam. His family were members of the Independent Chapel in Llandinam. They had the following children: Jane (1836), Anna (1838), Elizabeth (1841), Margaret (1844), Edward (1846), Joseph (1848), Thomas (1851), John (1854), Mary (1856). They were all born in the Llandinam/Llanwnog area. John emigrated to Australia, and died in Toowoomba, Queensland. I am searching for the parents of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Griffiths. Related locations: Abermule, Whitchurch. Seem to be ag labs and/or railway workers. Richard was a farmer at Cefn Bryn.

From The Montgomeryshire Collections Vol XLVIII 1944 Llanfair Caereinion in the early 19th century by Charles H Humphreys J.P. pp 143-154 p 148 The Great Poverty of the Old Days. From all accounts great poverty prevailed in those days, especially at times of bad harvests and periods of depression, such as the Hungry Forties. The allowances made to the poor by the Board of Guardians were meagre in the extreme. The allowance to oldpeople even during the latter part of the 19th century was only 2s-6d per week, and 3s per week to old couples. Some old men received only 1s per week. How meagre were the allowances of the local Guardians is shown inthe case of a man named Pugh, who worked at the Vyrnwy water works and throug a fall of earth was killed. There was no compensation from his employers, the Liverpool Corporation for his widow and child. On applying tothe Llanfyllin Guardians she was allowed the sum of 2s-6d for herself and her child, on applying for an increase, she was refused. The meagre allowances were supplemented by a very old local custom of allowin...
