MY ANCESTER JOHN PENDLEBURY(55) AND HIS WIFE ALICE (50), MARY,(25), JACOB (20), JANE, (25), ELIZABETH (20) AND ABRAHAM, (15) ALL APPEAR IN THE 1841 CENSUS OF ASHTON UNDER LYNE. I WOULD LIKE CLUES AS TO WHERE TO FIND RECORDS OF THEIR BIRTHS, MARRIAGES,ETC. WHICH WOULD PREDATE THE BEGINNING OF SUCH RECORDS IN 1837. THEY WENT TO THE USA IN 1842 FROM LIVERPOOL TO NEW YORK AND ALL EXCEPT ABRAHAM DISAPPEARED.

Whitehead and Lees - Ashton-Under-Lyne
Eliza Ann Whitehead lived at 84 Stockport Rd Ashton U-L when she died in 1920 at 75 yrs. Husband Luke died prior to 1920 & he was a licensed victualler. I would like to know Eliza's family name. Eliza & Luke had several children - some of them are Samuel, Luke, Joseph. Son Samuel married Sarah Ann Lees at Mossley in 1897 at St George's Church in Mossley. They lived at the Hiltons, Lees Rd Mossley. Any info would be appreciated -

I am researching Family Tree and any information on the following would be greatly appreciated. Thomas Hyde (trade was as a Weaver) who married Mary and gave birth to a son, George (1816). George Hyde, (trade was as a Shoemaker) married Sarah Newton in 1835 and gave birth to Ann (1836), Silas (1838) & Mary (1840) before emmigrating to Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia in 1841. Sarah Newton also (1816) was a daughter to William Newton (trade was as a Cotton Spinner).

I am looking for information on George Smith born 1857 Birmingham I can find him 1881 and 1891 census in Ashton Under Lyne, first as a Newspaper journalist and later as a Newspaper Editor and Manager - he later moved to Plymouth to become a Newspaper Subeditor. I was hoping somebody may have some information regarding the Newspaper he worked on - His son George Harold Smith (born 1877) served an apprenticeship with Herald Publishing for 19 months before joinging the Army in 1899 - though oddly on his miltary service record he lists his profession as Seaman - Any help with that would also be gratefully received.

Reginald Lawton was a haulage contractor in 1928 not sure of date of birth. In 1974 he was in Ashton Under Lyne. Looking for any Lawton who may be related. Apologies for lack of information but this is my huge brick wall. Reginald was noted on my mothers birth certificate in 1928. My mother was left in a convent in 1928.

I am looking for Any descedants of Albert Warburton. He was born in 1876 in denbighshire Wales. He moved tho the Ashton Area in his teens. He was married 3 times in total. 1st Ether Ann Dyson, I know for definite that they had 2 girls Sarah b. 1898 And Marion. Marion died in 1904. There are 2 boys that we(my family) think they had and that was Wilfred b 1905 and William b1909. Esther died in 1909. 2nd was to Jane Gaskell b 1876. In 1911 Jane and Albert were living together and classing themselves as married but they didn't marry till 1912.They lived at 177 Union Street A-U-L. I haven't found any records of them having children. 3rd marriage was to Hilda Heath(b 1892) in 1933. They had 1 daughter named Miriam. I am also looking for any connections to Hilda Heath's first husband Robert Wallwork b 1890. They were married in 1915. Previously they lived together as Hilda's mother Mary Ellen Heath nee Sutton had married Roberts father Cyrus Wallwork b1854. I know Robert had many siblings. Robert and Hilda had 2 sons together Norman Heath Wallwork b 1918c and Cyril Sutton Wallwork 1926-2000. They also had a daughter Elsie Mary born in 1916 but she died as a child. I know Norman became a baker and went to live in Fylde Blackpool. I have not yet been able to trace what became of Robert Wallwork. All I know is that Hilda remarried in 1933. I know all of them had a connection to st Michaels church. Any info would be appreciated

LOOKING WILCOX AND BROWNING - Aspull
Searching George Wilcox b.c1849 d.abt 1945 married Martha Ann Browning 20/7/1868 Alverstoke Hampshire. Martha died December 1889 Portsea Island. There were three children Sarah, Ellen and William b.12/10/1882 d.24/9/1939 (Pukemiro, New Zealand - mining disaster)(my grandfather)he married Dorothy Seddon b.24/11/1883 died 25/1/1981 Dargaville, New Zealand m. 12/11/1898 St Elizabeth Church - in I believe Aspul or Wigan area. I have been unable to find William in any records I have accessed and although I have found Geoges dates I do not know where he lived. I would also like knowledge of Martha as we have only just found out her name. William I understand lived at 6 Brinsop Street, Aspull nr Wigan and Dorothy lived at 10 Scott Lane, Aspull nr Wigan. She talked of a bridge near where she lived and in 1979/80 it was still there as a doctor from England knew exactly where she had come from and the bridge separated the two homes. Does anyone perhaps know where this bridge would be and perhaps a photograph could be taken.

Stott - Astley
The Stott family were carriers and carters in the Astley and Tyldesley areas (Lancs) for about 150 years from 1730. The family lived initially at Marsley Green and kept the Cart & Horses Inn at Town Lane during the early part of 19th C. Any information on this family and their business, especially any 18th & 19th C linkages with the nearby Bridgewater canal trade or construction would be much appreciated.

Later described as Musician, Pianoforte Tuner and even Professor of Music. Children Mary, John, William, Margaret, Elizabeth, Peter, Ann, Joseph and my ancestor Alice. He also lived at Cheetham's Row and Town Lane. I believe although not certain that they were Catholics.

Rosses Arms formally Astley Arms - Astley Green
Astley Arms now named Rosses Arms on Higher Green Lane was built in 1850 and my grt grt grandfather John Grundy was in 1851 census the first landlord, John died in 1860 and his wife Jemima stayed on with her seven chidren, she remarried in 1865 to a George Pope. In 1871 David Grundy and his wife Ellen took over the pub , he was nephew to the late John Grundy. In 1885 David's son Thomas and his wife Elizabeth took over the tenancy untill 1907.Good going for my Grundy family running this Astley Arms from 1851 till 1907. Israel Parry then took over the tenancy, later his son Hindley Parry. Then Stanley Spencer and his wife Dorothy spent many years as landlord. I do not know where Thomas Grundy and Elizabeth moved to in 1907, but his mother Ellen is a widow in 1891 and in the Commersial Inn in Bedford Leigh.Living with her is her married daughter Margaret and son in law John Guest grandson Stanley Guest.

My Great Grandfather Richard Grundy was born in Astley Green in 1823. He married Mary Ann Ellis at Eccles Parish Church in 1846, in the 1851 and 1861 census he is a Beerhouse Keeper in Carruthers St Manchester. On his wedding cirtificate his fathers name is David Grundy,occupation Boatman, so perhaps he worked on the Bridgewater canal from Astley Green. Any information about family and and canal workers please.

Barlows and Marlands in Astley - Astley Green
I would very much like further information on the genealogy of John Barlow born c.1809, a boatman who married Alice Gore b.1815 in Liverpool on 19 May 1834 and settled in Astley, near Manchester. He had a son Richard Barlow, born in Lymm, Cheshire in 1846 and who married Elizabeth (Granny) Barlow on 8 November 1868 in Astley.Their daughter Mary, born 1869 married my great grandfather Peter Marland born 1867, son of Robert Marland and Betty (Betsey) Green. As this Barlow family worked on the canals it has been difficult to trace them. Richard Barlow was later a hay and corn dealer in Astley. I am also stuck with the Marlands of Astley/Tyldesley. I have been able to trace the Marlands of Astley back to 6 January 1731 when John Marland was married to Alice Heys in Tyldesley near Leigh. He was born before 1707, but I don't know where. Alice was born in Leigh in 1697. John had a brother Joshua, I think. Many thanks for any help!

The mysteries of Henry Cowburn - Atherton
I am looking for details on the birth and marriages of Henry Cowburn, born in Atherton c1835. I know that he married Ann (possibly but not deffinitely Smith) and had 5 children: Ellen, Martha, James, Alice, Louisa. I am very confused about his birth which may have been illigitimate? I have found a birth matching his profile listed as born to 'single woman' Ellen Cowburn. However, on the 1851 census he is living as 'son' to John and Alice Cowburn. Also, I think that he later remarried Grace Roper (also known as Whittle and Lucas at different times due to previous marriages). Any help appreciated - I'm stuck!

Murder - Atherton
Has anybody ever heard of a woman organising the murder of her husband in Atherton? The man may have been William Nickson born 1846 in Norley Cheshire. He lived in Atherton in 1881 but I can find no trace of him after this time. He was a shoe maker - any information would be appreciated.
