Bithel family - Hindley
I am trying to find a birth for Mary Bithel(possibly Bethel), I am not sure of the spelling, as it varies from time to time.
Mary was on the 1841 census age 3, so I guess that makes her birth approx. 1838., but on the 1851 census she was 10.
Her parents were Richard Bithel and wife. Her name varies throughout the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census, as Betty, Ellen and Elizabeth.
That is not the end of the story, however.
I think it is possible that my g.g. grandmother Elizabeth,(mother of Mary) was illegitimate, and that as her mother Ann Lucas married James Whittle in 1810,
Elizabeth was married under the name of Whittle.
I found Richard Bithel m Elizabeth Whittle in 1830 at All Saints, in Hindley.
Hope some can make head or tail of this , and can help.!
Regards Mary.

John (Jack) Thompson - Holcombe
I am searching for details about my grandad. He lived in Ramsbottom with my grandmother Minnie until he went off to war. They had a son called Peter. There was no word from overseas until 1947 when my grandad turned up on his wife's doorstep - she had been told he was missing in action and had remarried. He gave his epaulets and cap badge (The Royal Tank Regiment) to my dad and then left. We later learnt that he had been captured in Libya and taken to Italy as a POW; does anyone have anymore information please?

James Pickthall, Gamekeeper, and Catherine Parkin - Holker
My gg-grandfather James Pickthall (1830-1902) worked as gamekeeper for a Mr Cavendish, brother to the Duke of Devonshire. James was a younger son from a large farming family, and had been born at Old Park, in the parish of Dalton in Furness, Lancashire. I don't know where he met Catherine Parkin, who was from Wigton, Cumberland and worked as a domestic servant, but perhaps they were both employed at Holker Hall. When they married in 1862, Catherine was pregnant and had an older child. Two of their children were born in the area: one at Cark in Cartmel in 1864, the other at Holker in Cartmel in 1866. Their next (known) child was born in 1870 on the Isle of Walney, where James's family lived, so they may not have been at Holker at the time of the great fire in 1871. I would love to confirm James and Catherine's employment, and what years they lived in the Holker area.
