Clergy Widows Almshouse
- Bromley
From The New and Complete British Traveller 1784
p 022 Bromley
Bromley is but a small town, mostly noted for being the residence
of the Bishops of Rochester. Dr Warner bishop of this see in the
time of Charles I and II founded a house for the reception of 20
poor widows of clergymen, who receive each an allowance of 20 pounds
per annum, besides 50 pounds to a chaplain who reads prayers, and
preaches on Sundays. This was the first foundation of this sort
ever established in England, but it has been since followed in some
other dioceses. He was Bishop of Rochester 1637-he died 1666.
Opposite the house where the widows have their apartments, is the
work-house, first built in 1731.
