Smith, Bishop's Stortford - Bishop's Stortford
My great-grandfather, Arthur M. Smith, lived in Bishop's Stortford in 1901 (aged 36), according to the census, helping his brother Henry run a public house at 71 Market Square. Was this Smiths Wine Store? Does anyone know what happened to Arthur, his second (bigamous?) wife Mary or his daughter Evelyn, born in Widnes c. 1896? I'd love to tell her descendants about the first wife and little girls he left behind in Widnes, the eldest of whom was my Grandma!

James Smith - Convict - Bishop's Stortford
James Smith of Bishopstortford, Lincoln, parish of St Mary le Wigford, age 22yrs, was tried at Lincolnshire City Session Court on 22 October 1814 for stealing a silver pint measure - value 10pence - the property of a Mr Lancelot Marsland, at the Black Swan Inn in the Lincoln parish of St Mary le Wigford. Sentenced to 7 years transportation to the colony of New South Wales. The convict ship 'Baring' sailed from England on 20th April 1815 and landed in New South Wales on 7th Sept 1815, a voyage of 140 days.
Later on board the 'Kangaroo' James sailed to Van Diemans Land (Tasmania), landing in Hobart Town on the 6th Dec 1816. It is on convict papers that the name King first appears & he was known variously by Smith or King.
I am descended from James Smith/King & would very much like to know who his parents/siblings might have been. If anyone has this James Smith in their family line I'd love to hear from you - I have much to share.

The Descendants of Thomas Chandler (1475-1554) - Bishop's Stortford
I am of the 17th generation to have descended from Thomas. I am aware of two genealogical works that provide source information of Thomas' descendants.
The first is an article from the "The New England Historical and Genealogical Register", pp. 133-45, Vol 85, April, 1931 article, "The Ancestry of William Chandler of Roxbury, Mass.". This article identifies Thomas as the first Chandler known to have lived in Bishop's Stortford. It cites some primary sources of information on Thomas' approximately 108 descendants born in Bishop's Stortford.
The second is the 1883 book written by Dr. George Chandler "The Chandler Family, The Descendants of William And Annis Chandler, Who Lived In Roxbury, Mass., 1637." This work catalogues nearly 5,000 descendants of William the great great grandson of Thomas.
I invite correspondance from other descendants of Thomas and/or any researchers in the Bishop's Stortford area who may be able to help me identify additional facts and sources of information on the life and times of this bloodline. Thank you.
