William Wood
- Bristol
I am searching for information about the Wood family of Bristol. William Wood was born around 1836/37 in "St Philips Gloucester" but moved to London at some point before he was 25 and married London born Phoebe Duffield in 1858. He spent the rest of his life in London and they produced 10 children, Elizabeth, William, Edward, Emily, Susannah, Nancy, Charles, Florence, Frederick & Herbert. I have researched our London family a bit but don't know anything at all about the Bristol side (or even why William Wood moved to London). William Wood was a carpenter. Most of the present Wood family live in or around London or on the south coast. I would be very interested to hear from anyone with any information.

Royal Fort home of theTripp /Dyer families.
- Bristol
Can anyone help? In 1816 an attorney-at-law JOHN TRIPP sold Iwood House in Congresbury and moved with his family to Royal Fort in Bristol. Where and what is Royal Fort ? I have been told that it is now part of Bristol University campus. It seems an odd move. John Tripp had a large family including Dyer nephews and nieces he had adopted when they were orphaned in 1800.
Was Royal Fort a house, or apartments as we should now call them ? Why was it so called ? Does anyone have a history of it ?
Any help at all much appreciated

Joseph Wilks transported
- Bristol
On the evening of 19th November 1830 someone broke into the dwelling house of Henry Marley (currier and shopkeeper) of Ann Street in the Parish of St. Philip & St. Jacob (County Somerset/Gloucester.
Joseph Wilkes appeared in Court at Gloucester on 30th March 1831 charged with the house-breaking. He was sentenced to death however his mother Mary Ann had a firm belief in her sons innocence she engaged the services of Francis Nixon a solicitor of Bristol in the hope of preventing the death sentence being carried out. Many letters were exchanged and finally Joseph Wilks sentence was commuted to transportation to Van Diemens Land for life
A list of transportees from Gloucestershire to Australia during the period 1783-1842 list Joseph Wilkes as a 17 year old youth in 1831 (i.e. born 1814), from the parish of St. Philip & St. Jacob in Bristol. He had a brother William thought to have been born 1817.
I can find no trace of Joseph or his mother Mary Ann a bonnet maker prior to his court appearance. Does anyone have a suggestion?

St. Michael's Church, Bristol
- Bristol
Two daughters of John Tripp Frances and Mary are said to have been married on the same day- 23 June 1820 at St. Michael's Church, Bristol. Frances was aged 20 and her sister Mary was 16. Frances married her cousin John Dyer a widower aged 36 and her sister married a lawyer Thomas Townsend aged 44. This strikes me as a bit odd what were Mary's parents thinking of ? ! She was left a widow two years later with one infant son. Frances died in 1827, it is thought in child bed.
Can anyone tell me whether the Parish records of St. Michael's still exist and if so, where I might find them?
Help much appreciated
