GOLDING
- Braintree
Susannah Golding, presumably born c.1800, married Thomas Garnett of Terling in Braintree on 14 Oct 1819. She lived in Terling after this date, and died there in 1854. On the 1851 census she is listed as schoolteacher and shown as living in the school house even though her husband was a humble glover. Does anyone have details of a Golding line in Braintree?

Courtauld hospital
- Braintree
A friend has found that her father died in the William Julien Courtauld hospital in 1948, even though his home address was in Wales. He was, or had been,in the Army. Was there a military use for the hospital post-war or did it specialise in other things apart from, as I now see, maternity.

Braintree or Bocking
- Braintree
I am descended from Sarah Patmore born 1786 dau of John Patmore and Elizabeth (Williams) of Braintree/Bocking. Sarah married Richard Battlebury in 1803 and many years later gave birth to a son in St Katherine Creechurch workhouse. The Patmore family paid for his keep at the workhouse when mother abandoned him there to remarry. Hence the Battlebury connection may be a red herring but the Patmore connection is real, I have copies of the monies paid to the workhouse for his keep and for his wooden leg by Ann Patmore (Sarah's sister in law?).
Can anyone shed any light on this mystery? or help with previous antecedents?
Any help much appreciated.

Smiths/Brooks/Pedocks/Wilkinson
- Braintree
Joseph Smith married Susannah Peadock 1838 St Michael's Braintree.
He was otherwise known as James Smith. Susannah was born in Stebbing.Joseph was a marine store dealer/hawker and in 1871 was running The Traveller's Rest on Pound End.
Susannah was sometimes formerly Peadock and sometimes formerly Brooks. There was a lot of name changing going on, both surnames and forenames, and mostly in the Brooks/Peadock families.
Susannah's parents were John Piddock and Elizabeth, who appear in census entries as Brooks.
Joseph's father was James Smith, whitesmith of Halstead.James married a Sarah Smith in Braintree 1815, both widowed by then. Joseph was born in 1816.
The first daughter of Joseph and Susannah-ELiza Peadock Smith, born around 1837, was with William and Susan Wilkinson New Street in 2 census entries, and allegedly their niece.
Names associated with the marriages of some of Joseph and Susannah's children are Harrison, Farthing, Cutts, Whitnall (the latter from Norfolk).
