Rose, Danns and Surry in Great Chesterford
- Great Chesterford
My great great grand parents Robert Rose and Jane Danns hailed from Great Chesterford. Robert, b 1812 approx, was a Master Miller and worked at the mill in Ickleton just over the railway line in Ickleton. Jane Danns, b 1821 approx, had a cottage in the High Street, which stayed in the family until around the 1950s. It was copyhold property; made freehold in the 1930s. Cottage post second world war was called Rose Cottage. In the 1960s, I understand Rose Cottage was renamed Maltings Cottage. They had nine children who survived infancy, the last of whom died in the 1950s.
I have no further information about Robert Rose's parents and would be delighted to receive any information.
I believe Jane Danns' father was Anthony Danns (b 1786 Great Chesterford) and her mother Rebecca Surry (b 1791 Great Chesterford) - they married at Great Chesterford in 1815. I have traced three potential siblings for Rebecca:
(1) John Surry b 1795 who married Ann Hedges in Cambridge in 1816;
(2) Mary Surry b 1789 Great Chesterford;
(3) Samuel Surry b 1782 Great Chesterford who married a Sarah [unknown].
I believe Samuel Surry had three children:
(a) Martin Surry b 1805; I think he was a Lime Burner but certainly his son was - Samuel Surry b 1841 who married Louisa Perrin in 1868 - no children. I don't know Martin's first wife's name, but Martin appeared to have married a second time to an Ann Sussex, b 1833 Swavesey Cambridgeshire. No other children that I can find.
(b) Elizabeth Surry b 1807 Great Chesterford.
(c) Amy Surry b 1810 Great Chesterford.
I think the parents of Rebecca, John, Mary and Samuel were Robert and Ann (maiden name unknown) Surry.
I have traced two potential siblings for Jane Danns:
(i) John Danns 1816-1884. He was a Tailor who lived in Great Chesterford.
(ii) Anthony Danns 1826-unknown. Warehouseman, Journeyman Miller; he moved to Cambridge and lived in Princes Street 1871 and Bentinck Street Cambridge 1881/1901. Anthony married Hannah [unknown] b Stretham, Isle of Ely 1826. They had 5 children:
(A) Mary Jane Danns b 1852 Saffron Walden area(dressmaker);
(B) Grace Hannah Danns b 1858 Cambridge (Confectioners Assistant); m 1888?;
(C) Susan Elizabeth Danns 1860-1890 b/d Cambridge (Milliners Assistant);
(D) John Harry Danns b 1862 Cambridge (Grocer/ shopkeeper); in 1901 123a High Street, Huntingdon St Mary;
(E) William Danns b 1854 Cambridge (Railway Clerk/Station Master).
William Danns married Elizabeth [unknown] b Clayton, Yorks 1855; and had a number of children, including:
- Grace Elizabeth b 1882 Kilnhurst, Yorks;
- Harry William b 1884, Kilnhurst, Yorks;
- Lillian Mary b 1886 Kilnhurst Yorks;
- Elsie Mabel b 1891 Tankersley Yorks.
As William worked for the railways as a station master he moved around the country quite a lot - in 1881 he was in Kilnhurst in South Yorkshire, and he was in Rugby, Warwickshire in 1901.
I would welcome any further information on the Rose's, Danns', and Surry's - whether to provide additional information, or to tell me I've jumped to the wrong conclusions.
