Mahala BARKER - (Ashdon - Essex)
Mahala BARKER married Joseph NUTTING around 1835, just before the BMD records began. Mahala was born about 1813 and Joseph about 1793 - quite an age gap! I think Joseph died in 1868 aged 75. I think Mahala died in 1899 aged 86. The family have strong links to Ashdon and Saffron Walden in general as well as Poplar. Mahala and Joseph had a son James - James had a son Albert Edward who was my great-grandfather. I am especially interested in the background to the name Mahala and a possible date of marriage for Mahala and Joseph.

Frederick Pratt and the Ashdon meteorite - (Ashdon - Essex)
In 1923, Frederick Pratt, described as a Thatcher, was working in a field near Ashdon in Essex when after several loud bangs a meteorite fell nearby. People living in surrounding villages were said to have heard the noise (would like some names). A short while afterwards he brought a fellow worker/friend named Curzon (Christian name unknown) to the place and together they dug the stone out of a hole breaking several bits off in the process.
Everything was reported to the police presumably at Saffron Walden where the Police Station had an Inspector and a Sergeant (again names unknown) In the 1920s two constables Arthur W Cross and John Hallum occasionally visited Ashdon. The meteorite was given into the care of the Rev Francis W Berry of Wendens Ambo. He contacted the British Museum and the curator of the meteorite collection came to visit.
The events were reported in the local paper so presumably an unknown reporter interviewed people. Some photographs were taken
If anyone knows any thing more, can fill in the missing names, say where the people came from (they weren't residents of Ashdon), where they went and particularly who were their descendents, please contact me through Curious Fox.
Perhaps most exciting would be to find the missing bits, maybe someone.s grandfather kept a piece on the mantle shelf.
Family Surnames: Pratt And Curzon

17th century Barking - Barnes family - (Barking - Essex)
I live in the U.S., and I've traced part of my family back to Thomas Barnes, who was born in 1623 in Barking, Essex. (There were also three generations of Thomas Barneses before him, but I'm not sure if they were in Barking, Essex, or Barking, Sussex.) My query is whether there is anything left in modern Barking from those times (early 17th century or before) -- even if just a church or churchyard. Might it be worth a visit, or has it been transformed into a relatively modern suburb? If perchance anyone knows anything about Barneses there, that would be great to know too.
