Hadrill/Copland
- Chelmsford
Looking for information about any descendants of George Hadrill and Emmeline Copland who were married in London, England in July-Sept1891 (GRO reference Pancras 1b 21). In 1898 according to a report of the funeral of Emmeline's father, John Albert Copland, a lawyer from Chelmsford, Essex, George was working for the Board of Trade in Montreal, which suggests that any descendants might be in Canada or the US. They had at least one son who was living in 1936, because in the report of the funeral of Emmeline's brother Charles Copland there was a floral tribute from "Mr G H Hadrill, nephew". I can't find a birth registration in England between 1891 and 1901 of a son with these initials however.

Sewell Joseph
- Chelmsford
1807 - Born in Essex England
By referring to various documents such as the Indents of the Ship, Lady Harewood and Joseph Sewell’s Ticket of Leave, it is estimated that Joseph Sewell was born in around 1807 and that his native place of dwelling was Essex in England.
1832 - Tried, Chelmsford, England
On the 3rd of January 1832, aged twenty-five years, Joseph Sewell was tried in Chelmsford for the offence of stealing a turkey. His trade was shown as a Ploughman, Reaps, Sows and Milks. He was single and a Protestant and could read and write. Having a prior conviction of three months, this saw him receive the penalty of 14 years, to be served in the Colony of New South Wales.
His description was described as five feet six and three quarter inches, dark sallow complexion, brown hair with Hazel and small eyes. He had the distinguishing features of a thick nose and a Heart with two sails, J.S. Man, M.S. Anchor, 1832 on lower letter arm, blue ring on left middle finger and a scar on the back of left thumb.
1832 - Arrival in New South Wales
The 'Lady Harewood' left Portsmouth on the 15th of March 1832 and arrived in the Colony of New South Wales on the 5th of August, 1832. The General Return of Convicts in New South Wales of 1837 shows that Joseph was aged 30 years and assigned to a P.J. Fredericks.

Murphy, William
- Chelmsford
I am researching my Murphy/Sewell links to Chelmsford. My 3 GGfather and GGmother were William Murphy and Mary nee Sewell (married c.1859).There are several Mary Sewells of maybe the right age listed in 1852 Census. Their son (Alfred Sidney) was born in 1861 and William was listed as gentleman, so no clues available as to occupation. By 1890, the son Alfred was in Brisbane Australia, via Mauritius married to Sarah Ann Davis in Brisbane Australia. (1891) A letter of recommendation from the Bishop of Mauritius for the son (Alfred) on his way to Australia (He seems to have been a teacher in Mauritius) says that William Murphy was dead and implies that Mary Sewell was a widow and maybe deceased herself by then. Any cousins still there in Chelmsford? Mary does not appear in death records in Queensland I think, because there are lots listed as Mary Murphy, and you can imagine the numbers of Mary Murphys of the right age in the Irish enclave of Queensland is horrendous. The big problem is that I do not know her (Mary Sewell’s) parents names, or William Murphys. If only they had an unusual surname? Any cousins many times removed out there? My daughter and I would love to find out more. Regards Rosie.
