Dent Surname
- Consett
I am posting this message in the hopes that someone might be able to help me. My paternal great-grandfather's name was Thomas Parnaby Dent. I don't have the year or place that he was born. I might possibly be August of 1858, around Middleton, buthave not been able to confirm this. I know that in 1923 he was listed as a labourer, his occupation was also listed as a Steelworker (this info from my grandfather's marriage certificate). I have been told by relatives that my Dent's come from farming stock in the NE part of England. The family lived near Wolsingham, then moved to Rowlands Gill. Thomas married Jane (1864-14 Sep 1949) and they had the following children: Robert (24 Apr 1897-23 Jul 1967)(my grandfather); Phoebe (1901-Dec 2003); Fred; Nancy; Eddie(adopted) died 1997. Robert was born in teh Wolsingham Sub District, Northumberland and lived in Rowlands Gill and Blackhill before he married to Elsie Robinson in 1923 at the Parish Church in the Parish of Blackhill, Consett, Co. Durham. Robert and Elsie emmigrated to Canada in 1930 with their 3 children(my father being one of them). Fred was born somewhere in the north part of England and married Margaret, I have no further info on them. Nancy worked as a nursemaid prior t...

COLEMAN
- Consett
Looking for information on, or descendants of, Annis ROBINSON and Thomas COLEMAN who probably married in the Richmond area in the June 1872 quarter. Annis was born in Cockerton (now Darlington) in 1852 and Thomas in Gayles in the parish of Kirkby Ravensworth near Richmond, North Yorkshire c1846. Annis and Thomas had the following known children: John James (1873), Arthur (1874), Eliza Jane (1875), Charles William (1877), Margaret Moore (1878), Wallace (1880), Emmeline (1882), Ernest (1883) and Ada (1885). All were born at Melsonby in North Yorkshire except for Charles who was born in Middlesbrough. Thomas Coleman was a quarry worker and some time before the 1901 census the family moved to Consett where they were enumerated at 37 Medomsley Road. As at that date, all the children were unmarried and living at home, except for Eliza Jane who was enumerated at the home of her grandparents (Annis's parents) John ROBINSON and Margaret nee MOORE in Marske. I believe John James might have subsequently married in Sunderland in 1902, Eliza Jane at Guisborough in 1902 and Margaret Moore at Consett in 1901. Anyone recognise any of them please?

Tracing Charltons of Berry edge Consett and Hendersons of Sherburn
- Consett
I am trying to trace the family of my great grandfather Thomas Charlton born in 1860 in William Street Berry Edge Consett. His mother was Jane and father unknown. He lived with his mother and widowed grandmother Isabella Charlton, born Isabella Carr in Slaley Northumberland. On his marriage certificate to Isabella Henderson in 1886 he names his father as Thomas Charlton but this was the name of his grandfather and also uncle. He worked as a miner and moved to Backworth, Blyth and Gosforth in Northumberland and died I think after 1930. Isabella Henderson was supposedly 17 in 1886 and had at least 9 children by Thomas Charlton, one of whom was my grandfather Thomas Charlton born in 1898. I know nothing of these children, or the rest of my great grandfather's family. Isabella Henderson was born around 1868 in Sherburn and her father was John Henderson a miner. Again I know nothing of this family.

Raven family in Cornsay Colliery
- Cornsay Colliery
I am researching my family history and found that an ancestor, James Raven from Earls Colne in Essex married in Cornsay Colliery in 1873 (his wife was also from Earls Colne in Essex. Their oldest daughter Alice (my great aunt) was born in Cornsay in 1874. By 1881 the family were back in Essex so they do not show up on the census records as they were still in Essex in 1871. A branch of the family (cousins) called Turner also moved to Co Durham at around the same time (Quebec) and then returned south. Does anyone have any information about why these familes were in the area, and what they did (miners?), and why they returned south?
Thanks, Nick
