OLIVE and JACK CARR of CHESTER LE STREET, C. 1930's - Chester-Le-Street
Does anyone have any knowledge of this couple please. In the early 1930's they helped to bring up Kitty Taylor (13 years old in Dec 1930) after her family separated. Olive and Jack Carr lived then at Chester le Street and had a son, possibly other children too. Kitty remembered that Olive had had to look after a 'Grandma Westerman' for some time before she married Jack Carr. I am looking for more Carrs,Taylors, Coates and Westermans in the Durham/Darlington/ Chester le Street areas who might have a connection to Kitty Burridge (nee Taylor). Kitty was born at Ferryhill Dec. 1917. Her parents were Thomas and Bertha Taylor (nee Coates). Thankyou.

I am looking for more information on a William Thomson who was born in Scotland in 1823 prior to 1871. The information I have is that he worked as a Manager Woodman, he was married to Mary Jane Thomson, I don't have her maiden name. They lived at 6 Chopwell Woods, later moving to Winlation and had three children, John, William, (my great grandfather), and Jemima. I would love to know where in Scotland William Thomson came from and what his parents were called.

My father was Stanley Hewitson, born 1917 in Chopwell, son of Matthew Henry Hewitson and Eveline Pigg (Later she remarried and was Eva Wilson of Valley Dene). Chopwell mine - Chopwell
Do you have any idea where these mine records would likely be archived? I think Durham records office hold some but I don't live in the area so haven't been able to travel there yet. Have you done research on them? A number of my family, Pigg's and Hewitson's worked in these pits in the 1st half of the 20th C. Do you know of any one doing research about chopwell mines? Meehan family, Durham - Cleadon
I am investigating the Meehan Family, originally from Ireland, possibly Co Mayo. My grandmother, Lillian Meehan was born, 1896 in Cleadon. Her father was Myles Meehan born 1872 at Cannery Hill and his father was Martin Meehan, born 1828 in Ireland (the name of the town is spelled three different ways on three censuses). Martin married Jane York(e) on 10th Feb 1855 and they had 4 children that I know of. Martin died 1902. Any information about the Meehans of Durham that may be connected would be welcomed. Origins Of Close House - Close House
My family comes from the villages and towns of the Auckland area and I am curious about the origins of 'Close House', a small village now part of Bishop Auckland. An 1825 traveller's account refers to a small group of houses, the farm and cottages of'Close House' in the Dean Beck valley. The farm was a detached portion of Bishop Auckland township, about 32 acres in area with a population of no more than 20. An 1857 map shows a large T-shaped building plus several smaller structures identifedas 'Close House', fields that straddle a small stream plus a water source identified as the 'Close House Well'.

Looking for descendents of Mary Ann ROBINSON, daughter of John ROBINSON, a gardener, and William Henry OLD, son of Richard OLD, a sailor. Mary Ann was born in 1850 at Cockerton (Darlington) and William at Linthorpe in Middlesbrough in 1848. They married at Paradise Chapel, Paradise Row in Darlington on 8 July 1871 and they produced the following children, all born in Middlesbrough: Laura Sophia (1872), Minnetta Annie (1874), John Herbert (1875), Margaret Louisa (1877), Hilda Mary (1878), William Burton (1880), Arthur Rochard (1881), Edward Randolph (1886), Lena Emmeline (1887) and Gladys Olivia (1892). William was a boot or shoemaker and was the manager of the boot and shoe department at the Middlesbrough Co-op at the time of the 1901 census.
