Looking for the descendants of Thomas Dowson, lived in Bishopwearmouth from 1825 until his death at Hendon Rectory, Rutland Rd. in 1881. (born Witton-le-Wear 1800). He first married Elizabeth Crofton in Bishopwearmouth in 1825, and 2) Elizabeth Melvin in Monkwearmouth in 1833. Looking for descendants, if any, of his daughters from his first marriage: Margaret Dowson b.1826, Isabella Dowson b. 1827, marriages unknown, and from his second marriage, his daughter Mary Ann Dowson(b.1839, d.1910)who married John Edward Anderson at Brougham St. Tabernacle in 1873 (Edward/John died 1918). Their son John Coundon McNamara died in Sunderland in about 1877 aged 18, 2 other sons were Charles and Thomas Their daughter Elizabeth married John Herring Arnison.

GEORGE JOHNSON age 43 an Outdoor Officer with HM Customs, and his wife MARGARET nee ROBINSON age 42, both died of typhus fever in October 1871 at 35 Lawrence St, Bishopwearmouth. They left three children: John-Robinson (13), Margaret-Sophia (10) and Robert (8), all listed on 1871 Census as scholars. JOHN ROBINSON JOHNSON married ELIZABETH DOWSEY MAGOG 1877. They had seven daughters, Margaret, Elizabeth, Ellen, Rebecca, Edith, Ruth and Lily, and a son George. (I have a WW1 postcard poss from George to his son Henry/Harry.) John was a grocer/storeman who died 03.08.1907 age 49 while working at Doxey's Shipyard. Poss res 40 Penser St. In 1911 Elizabeth and dtrs Ruth 15 and Lily 9 were living at 16 Pensher St, Sunderland. MARGARET SOPHIA JOHNSON married THOMAS COWELL, a copper engraver/lithographer. In 1901 they were living in Cleveland Road with two children, Florence b.1884 and Arthur Wellesley b.1887. Florence married HARRY COLLIER HOOD in 1908. In 1911, her mother and brother were living with her at 28 Mount Road, Sunderland. ROBERT JOHNSON was my G-Grandfather. He joined the merchant navy and, by the 1881 Census, had become known as ROBERT JONES. In 1883 he married LOUISA FAULKES in Southampton. (His shipmate Thomas DONNELLY married Louisa's sister Susan-Hephzibah.) The families moved to Newport, Mon. Robert & Louisa had three children: my Grandfather Robert George Jones b.1884, Margaret ca 1886-1889, and William b.1888. Robert was serving on the SS Odessa when he 'drowned' 27.08.1889 age 27. Home address at time of death, 33 Louisa St, Cardiff. In 1895 Louisa married THOMAS KILBY, they had four children and lived in Pontypridd. Does anyone recognise the Johnson family? There may be Scottish ancestry. I would like to know what became of the three orphaned children in 1871 but don't know where to start. I have some old photographs taken in Sunderland which I am told are of g.grandfather Robert.

Looking for info on Henry and William Robson, born 1835/1837, their sister Jane born 1850 Married Thomas Hulme, two more sisters Mary (my great gmother)who married Andrew Scott in 1859 then married Thomas Johnson, and the youngest Elizabeth who married Robert Aikens. The youngest boy Robert Robson born 1844 was a Professor of Music who married Frances Chilton. Their parents were Robert Robson born Norton 1811 and Isabella Ferry born 1815 in Witton Gilbert. Robert was a Woodman who worked on the Earl of Durhams Estate. I have no info on Henry or William, Mary I have a lot of, Elizabeth, I met her granddaughter who suppled me with valuable info. My ggfather was Elmer Cotton, mariner, born BWM c1815, married Margaret Maccaskill in Stornaway, Orkney, 25 Sept 1839. They had 5 children, William b 1840, Christiana b 1846, Kenneth Elmer b 1849, Sarah b 1851 and Elmer Johnathan b 1853. I have searched briefly at Durham CRO and found 2 or 3 Cotton families in BWM but not this one. Am struggling to find any more info - can anyone help please.

I'm looking for info on the famiy of my gg-grandfather, Vincent Hodgson b. 1807. There were 4 children named in the 1851 census, Havelock (1837), Jane (1839), Mary (1841) and Hannah (1949). The only children I have any additional info on are Hannah (my g-grandmother) and Havelock Hodgson who married Agnes Stewart of Gateshead in 1860. Havelock and his wife were traced to Northumberland in 1861 and I have no further info on his family. I have the birth certificate of Hannah and would like to obtain the birth certificate of Havelock as there is some confusion about the name of his mother. Hannah's certificate shows Elizabeth Havelock as her mother. Her name is on the census with the children. I have only been able to find a marriage certificate for Vincent Hodgson and Amelia Havelock in 1835. I would like to know the name of the mother on Havelock's birth certificate but as his birth occurred before registrations began, I am having difficulty finding this info. Does anyone have any knowledge of this family? If so, I would appreciate hearing from them.

I have no idea Mary's maiden name and can not find either on the 1841 census. The only information is from Ralph's wedding certificate which shows his father as William a cartwright. James Robson Wilson (1819-1881) - Blackwell
My Gt. Gt. Grandfather, James Robson Wilson, kept the Angel Inn in Blackwell from 1847 to about 1857. The inn stood on the corner of what is now the junction of the A67 and the A167 at Blackwell Roundabout. An Evans-Halshaw car showroom now occupies the position. I am particularly interested to find any further information about or pictures of the Angel Inn. I know that it closed as an inn in 1868 but that sometime later it was used as a school. Maybe pictures exist of the school? Charles

My great grandfather James McBride was born in 1845 (according to English 1871, 1891 & 1901 censuses, somewhere in Ireland). I'd love to know where he actually came from. There might be a Scottish Arran connection too. He married Alice McGurk (born Swalwell, daughter of Francis & Irish-born Bridget). Their children included John T., Robert, Jane, Bridget, Thomas, Francis and Richard William McBride. Their eldest son, (James Lewis McBride) was my grandfather who married Mary Walsh (his second wife). Mary's parents were Galway-born Patrick Walsh and Blaydon-born Elizabeth King. Elizabeth's parents were William King, a Manchester-born glass-blower and bottle maker, and her mother was William's second wife - the widow Mary Anne Corrin (nee Caffery) who was Irish-born. My father was 'Billy' McBride and his siblings (& half-siblings) included Jimmy, Dorrie, Zeta, Bart, Molly, Joe and Alice McBride, all born in Blaydon, England. Any information to share? I am searching for details about my great grandfather John Dodds. I know that he was born around 1895 his parents were John and Margaret Dodds who lived at 27 st Cuthberts place in Blaydon in 1915. I know this as I have a document adressed to them informing them of their son williams death whilst serving in world war 1. I think he also had a brother called thomas and a sister called betty.
