JOHNSON/ROBINSON/COWELL. BISHOPWEARMOUTH, SUNDERLAND
- Bishopwearmouth
Margaret Johnson (dtr of John & Ann Robinson) age 42 and her husband George (son of Robert) an Outdoor Officer with HM Customs age 43, died of typhus fever at 35 Lawrence St, BWM on 06.10.1871 and 09.10.1871 respectively.
They left three children: John Robinson Johnson (13), Margaret Sophia Johnson (10) and Robert (8), listed on 1871 Census as scholars.
John R. married Elizabeth Dowsey MAGOG Q3/1877. They had six daughters, Margaret, Elizabeth, Ellen, Rebecca, Edith and Ruth, and a son George. John R. was a grocer/storeman who died 03.08.1907 age 49 while working at Doxey's Shipyard. Poss res 40 Penser St.
I believe Margaret Sophia married Thomas COWELL, a copper engraver/lithographer. In 1901 they lived in Cleveland Road and he had his own business. They had two children, Florence and Arthur Wellesley.
Robert was my G-Grandfather. He joined the merchant navy and, either by accident or design, by 1881 Census had become Robert JONES. In 1883 he married Louisa FAULKES in Southampton. They moved to Newport, Monmouthshire where my Grandfather Robert George Jones was b. 1884. A daughter Margaret was b.ca 1886 but died aged two or three. Their last child William was born 1888.
Robert was serving on the SS Odessa when he 'drowned' (poss an explosion) 27.08.1889 age 27. The family were living in Cardiff.
Does anyone recognise the Johnson family? They appear to have used Scottish naming convention and this would support family lore.
I would like to know what became of the three orphaned children in 1871.
I have some old family photographs taken in Sunderland which I am told are of g.grandfather Robert but could equally be his brother John R. or a Cowell.

My father was 'Billy' McBride and his siblings (& half-siblings) included Jimmy, Dorrie, Zeta, Bart, Molly, Joe and Alice McBride, all born in Blaydon, England. Any information to share?
