Need help with a name change puzzle! - Herrington
I am trying to research my 'Lister' family roots. In particular I would like to know more about my Great-great grandfather. Sadly, this is where things get complicated, as he appears on the census of 1881, 1891 and 1901 as John Lister born in Hetton-le-Hole in 1839. Unfortunately, the only Lister baby born that year in Hetton was named Joseph, and Joseph appears on the earlier census living in East Rainton a village less than a mile from Hetton. Could this be my gt-gt grandad and has he changed his name at a later date, and why should he need to do this? 'John' Lister subsequently married Martha Dinah Ditchburn in 1869 and within a couple of months apparently visited America. Again I have discovered an anomaly in that Martha on the 1871 census is living in Crook and in the space for occupation states that her 'Husband is in America', but also on the 1871 census I have found a John Lister visiting a family in Sherburn who happen to be his in-laws the 'Curley's' originally from Penshaw but in 1871 living at the 'Seven Stars' in Sherburn. If any one can shed any light onto my research it would be gratefully received.
