My ancestor, John Pearson of Ormesby, was married in Darlington in 1653, to Averill Chapman of Darlington. I would be interested to know anything about these Chapmans, and whether an Estste in Harmby quite a distance away, would count as being "of Darlington".
John certainly owned property in Harmby some time after Averill's death.

I am searching for any information relating to my maternal Grandmother's siblings who moved with their parents, James Duckworth and Eliza Ann (nee Fairhurst) from Wigan to the Easington area around 1910 (?). Their names were Martha (b:1897), Henry (b: 1899 married Hilda Davison), Thomas, Violet, Evelyn, James, Hilda (aka Moira) and Ivy who apparently died young. Martha married George Parkinson in 1920, son of George Young Parkinson (of Bedlington, Morpeth) and had three of their children in Dawdon. One of the other sisters married a Nicholson who had a son R Nicholson - grandson of Eliza Duckworth. Eliza lived until 1968, aged 92, having been resident at Chaplin Street, Seaham since aroung 1916. I am struggling to find any information to do with this generation of my family and would be very grateful if anyone could offer me some help.

p 165 The Durham County Penitentiary a neat stone building, favourably situated in Gilesgate, was erected by subscription in 1852. It was opened in August of the same year by the reception of 2 inmates, and the chaplain entered on his duties, being licensed by the bishop of the diocese. After 7 inmates had been admitted, an assistant matron was appointed, and a laundry opened as a means of remunerative employment. The inmate being previously employed in making clothing and household furniture for the establishment. Thirty-nine inmates have been fully admitted to the institution since its establishment. Of these, thirteen are now in the house, thirteen have left and are living reputably, the condition of two is unknowm, whilst eleven are ascertained to be now leading a sinful life. Nine, however, of those eleven, remained only for a short time in the establishment. Chaplain - Rev. Edward Prest M.A.

Durham Workhouse
The Union Workhouse occupies an agreeable and pleasant situation in Crossgate. It is a plain stone building, erected in 1837, and contains ten roomsas sleeping apartments, a dining hall, which also serves as a chapel, a room for the meetings of guardians, together with the other requisite offices etc. It generally contains 150 inmates, and thegreatest order and cleanliness prevail throughout the entire establishment.
