Bear Cross - (Bear Cross - Dorset)
One of the many little villages used by Isaac GULLIVER for his smuggling. Kinson St Andrews was one of the many hiding places for contraband. Augustus JOHN, who lived down the road at Alderney, before WW1, is said to have frequented the (old) Bear Cross Inn, which my ggrandfather Edwin LANE ran 1884/5 till 1894. After this my ggrandmother Elizabeth ran the Inn, but her youngest son Frank soon took over, and was beer retailer until 1914. Frank then ran a very early garage. Bear Cross and the areahave been very badly developed. Most of the older buildings have been torn down, though Pelhams, a lovely Georgian house, is still standing, and used as a community centre. The church is still there!
