Uffculme Books
- Uffculme
Uffculme : a Peculiar Parish / Peter Wyatt & Robin Stanes, eds.
The Uffculme wills & Inventories, 16th to 18th centuries / Peter Wyatt,
ed.
These two books between them provide immense detail for the history of this
Devon parish in the early modern period. Probate documents exist for 754
Uffculme decedents in this period; they escaped the bombing of the Exeter
Probate Registry that destroyed most Devon wills by virtue of the fact that
Uffculme was a peculiar of the Bishop of Salisbury- and were therefore
stored at Salisbury. All of these documents are abstracted in these two
volumes, which also include extensive discussions of the evidence they
provide for the history of the parish. A real treasure trove if your
ancestors came from this part of Devon. Published 1997. Price for both
volumes £32 (including UK postage). Overseas £37.70; $US66.00. Email orders
welcome. Books will be sent with an invoice for payment on receipt. Payment
accepted in Sterling, U.S. dollarsor Australian dollars, preferably by
personal cheque. Please enquire for Australian dollar prices.

Handford family
- Uffculme
James Handford married Mary Trott in Uffculme, Devon in 1816 by licence. James was a butcher. I have details of the Trott side of the family with thanks to someone tracing that side. My main task now, is to search for James Handford and his ancestors.
There is a William Handford born in 1796 in Uffculme and I am querying whether this is actually 'James'. According to some people, it was not uncommon for the child to be baptised under the fathers name, whether by accident or otherwise. James and Mary moved to Bristol, Mary died and James remarried to another Mary. He died in Bristol in 1843. The Handford family then moved to Birmingham, this is where my father was born in 1915.

Southey of Uffculme
- Uffculme
Looking for birth info and parents of Thomas Southey (fl. 1770-1785). Can't locate his birth in IGI, and he doesn't appear on the 1841 census. I'm not sure if he was born in Uffculme, but all of his children were, between 1771 and 1786. He was married to Joan (unknown surname) and father of Margaret (1771-), George (1773), Joan (1775-), Mary (1777-), Thomas (c. 1779-), Anne (1779-), James (1784-), and John (1786-1854). I believe that Thomas married Harriott Hope in 1805 in Uffculme (I've found the IGI record for the marriage and subsequent children, but I can't yet confirm that the two Thomases are the same person). John married Mary (unknown surname), date unknown, and they lived in Uffculme until their deaths.

James and Martha Hall
- Ugborough
James Hall married Martha Lane at Easton-on-Gordon in 1814, where the eldest child Ellen Money Hall was born in 1815, and perhaps another three of their children. Later, the Halls are listed at Ashburton, where another daughter Catherine Hall is christened at the Wesleyan Church, Ashburton, Devon. Moving again to Ugborough where Edwin, Mary Lillie and Martha Jane Hall are christened in the years 1828, 1830 and 1832 respectively. Lydia was possibly born in Ugborough in 1835. In 1836 the Hall family emigrated to Tasmania on the Boadicea where the last of their ten children Matilda is born. James Hall dies in Hobart, 14 October 1862 and Martha, nee Lane on 10 July 1875. Ellen Money Hall marries Richard Augustus Frederick at Buckingham, Hobart20 March 1837 and they later emigrate with their family to join Paul Fredric already resident in Dunedin, southern New Zealand. Am interested in ascertaining the exact Devonshire origins of James Hall and other family connections to the county. Hearsay states that James was a gardener and this could explain his moving about so frequently.
