Many of you should be aware that the registration districts of East Teignmouth and West Teignmouth take in a sizeable surrounding area and not just the small coastal town of Teignmouth itself. In particular it stretched into parts of what are now the town of Torquay. When researching it may well pay you to check the regisration district for the parish.

Dorothy Peard
- Tiverton
I'm looking for info about Dorothy Peard born about 1741. Idon't know whanything about her parents but she was apparently brought up by a Madame Peard of Tiverton a rich relation who was "Proud and bigotted against dissenters". This was unfortunate as Dorothy married one - Samuel Hodges, a tanner from Dalwood near Axminster in 1769 at Tiverton. Dorothy does not seem to have been the most charming of women but is reported to have been " crabbed tempered and was separated from her husband" Her daughter Mary Peard Hodges was born in the year of her marriage and was a very different character, a little Quaker lady who used to sneak down before breakfast to put silver sixpences in her grandchildren's mugs before the milk waspoured.
Dorothy is reputed to have been descended from Oliver Peard on of the "Ejected Ministers"

Shoplands In Tiverton
- Tiverton
James SHOPLAND married Mary Ann WELLAND 1n 1832 at Tiverton. Mary Ann Died in 1841 and James then married Sarah LAWRENCE who was a British Subject born in France. They were known to be at the Bell Inn, Chapel Street, Tiverton in 1850s. Their descendants are known so information is required before the given date. It is possible that James was the son of GEORGE SHOPLAND born c 1805 - 1810 in the Tiverton area.
Sadly the Bell Inn was replaced by the Hare & Hounds and that in its turn being replaced by cottages. Now no. 48 stands on the old Bell Inn site
Any information would be welcome
