I live at Halwill and have found an interesting brick when demolishing a barn. It bears the scratched inscription, 'E Hunkin 13'. A search suggests this might have been Ehrad Hunkin from Shebbear who would have been around 13 at the time the barn was built. If it interests you, contact me.

Medieval Sheepwash (sepewasse) - Sheepwash
My probable ancestors held Sheepwash, or parts of it, in the 13th & 14th centuries. Their arms were Gules, a chevron between three roundels argent. Thomas de Bathe tried to seize the land from his cousin Elinor, wife of John Holland, but lost hiscase in court in 1351. Curiously, Elinor then turned Sheepwash over to Thomas' wife for the term of her life. The lands eventually passed to the Holland family.

Ann Kidwell - Shirwell
William Kidwell (1791 - 1854) married Mary Parker (1798 - 1860) on 29.6.1820 at Shirwell. They had seven children including Ann who was baptised on 1.1.1826. In 1851 census she was a House Servant at West Coxley, Shirwell employed by William Yeo who farmed 167 acres. According to the 1861 census Ann Romney has twins aged 10. Possibly she did not marry, two of her sisters appear to have had daughters out of wedlock.

As a child I had been told that in the 1800's my ancestors, the Talbot Baines's, or possibly they used only Baines, lived at a "Shute House" near Axminster. I heard that later this house was converted to a girl's school. It does not, then, seem that it could have been the famous Old Shute House. Any information appreciated!

Circa 1818 in Shute, Devon), married Edward Hoare (b. circa 1810 at Musbury, Devon) on 23 Mar 1837 in Colyton, Devon. It appears that Amelia had a brother Simeon and possibly sisters Sophia Ann and Ann. Simeon married Mary Pavey (of colyford, Devon)in 1847 and they had sons, Robert and John Charles. Sophia Ann was a witness at Edward and Amelia Hoare's wedding and married James Batstone, in Devon, in 1840. They had daughters, Ann, Mary (married George R Crichard), and Emma (married John Pearce). Ann Snell married William Smith, of Colyford, Devon. They had a son, John (b. circa 1828). If you have any of these people in your family tree, I would be interested to hear from you.
