Smugglers - Beer
Near Beer there used to be a place called Roncombe's Girt, now called Roncombe's Gate - but all we could find there was a signpost! On November 2, 1787 a fight took place there between smugglers and excise men, and two excise officers were killed.They were WILLIAM JENKINS and WILLIAM SCOTT. Our ancestor, GEORGE SALTER, of Kentisbeare, was one of the smugglers. Have always wanted to find out something about the men who were killed. Any information most gratefully received. Thank you. JAMES TROTT was born at Seaton @ Beer 06 April 1788 and married ELIZABETH STROUD - called Betsy. She was born 30 December 1812 in Black Torrington. His eldest son, JOHN, born 29 May 1813 emigrated to Ontarioin Canada with his brother WILLIAM in the early 1800s. Does anyone research Trott in the Seaton, Beer area? DNA testing says this man's descendants are a near match to my husband, so we'd like to find a common ancestor. Thank you, Ivy.

Found a Hoskins family in the 1841 census Beerferris-- James Hoskins 40 blacksmith--- Elizabeth Hoskins 40--- Mary 12--- Elizabeth 10-- Jane 5 --- James 15 months ---- 1851 census for Calstock, Cornwall-- James 53 blacksmith--- Elizabeth 50-- Jane 14--- Caroline 8--- William 2--- This family has another daughter ,Grace b 1824--not at home in the 1841 census. Grace married Peter Doidge. Mary married William Eselby(Ezelby) Know that Grace and Mary are the daughters of this family but have no proof that my gg grandmother is their daughter. All I have is that in William Hooper's Bible it states that his wife was born Aug.1836 ,Beerferris,Devon,England and that her father was James Hoskins. I am looking to obtain Maria's fathers name; it is thought to be Samuel, with a possible middle initial of "C" and possibly last name of Harvey. Looking to determine if parents married; or validate these long family lore rumors. Have document with incomplete information on Maria(dau.)death certificate USA; looking to get her father and mother's names correctly- and if other siblings came of this union. Richard Perrott married Sarah Penney in Berry Pomeroy on 31 December 1729. They had at least three children: John (b. 1731), Richard (b.1733), and Sarah (b. 1736). John married Christian (maiden name unknown) and they had seven children: Christian (b. 1760), Sarah (b. 1761), John (b. 1764), Mary (b. 1766), Betty (b. 1768), Richard (b. 1772), and Agnes (b. 1775). Richard was a cordwainer (shoemaker) in Bridgetown; he married Mary Ann (maiden name unknown, possibly Penney) from Stoke Damerel with whom he had nine children: Richard (b. 1803), John (b. 1804), Charles Lee (b. 1806), Jane (b. 1808), Thomas (b. 1811), William (b. 1814), Charles (b. 1816), James Gay (b. 1819), and Henry George (b. 1822). Charles Lee and Jane both died at a young age. John continued in his father’s trade as a shoemaker in Bridgetown and at the age of 50 married Jane Stevens from Cornwood. William became a tailor, also in Bridgetown, and married Jane Osborn(e), a local woman. Richard, Thomas, Charles, and Henry George all moved to London, although Charles later moved back to Devon, settling in Newton Abbot. Anyone having (or looking for) information about this family is asked to get in contact.
