Ruby and Counter families to Canada 1848 and 1851
- Newton Abbot
Thomas Ruby (1822-1902) married Louisa Augusta Lindsay (1820-1900) in Newton Abbot, Devonshire, England, in 1849 in the Jan - March quarter. They probably said their goodbye and left in March or April for Canada where their first child was born in 1851 in West Nissouri Township, Middlesex County, Ontario. They were probably encouraged to emigrate by another couple, Richard Counter (b. 1814) and Mary Ruby (b. 1816) who were in Canada by 1848 when their son John was born. The first children of the Counter family were born in England: George 1835, Mary J 1837, James 1842, Aaron 1844 and Moses 1847. Richard Counter was a joiner living with his family in East Nissouri Township, Oxford Co. Ontario, Canada in a frame house, which he probably built, in the 1851 census.
