Vigars Family
- North Brentor
I am researching the history of the Vigars family. All so far discovered throughout the world who bear the name, spelt in exactly the same way, are descended from a family that lived in this Devonshire village from at least the 1500s until 1900s. Theearliest ancestor so far discovered is a John Figures who was baptizing his children from 1612-1622. Until 1880 this village was in the Parish of Lamerton. A William Vigars, my 5 x Great-grandfather, was Churchwarden of Lamerton in 1751. In the 1780s the family were tenant farmers at a farm now called Bonnafords (then Burnafords) and another sometimes called Windsors after it's owner. The tenancy of the latter remained with Arthur Vigars, son of William until 1816. Tony Vigars

Elizabeth remained in North Huish until 1851/52 when she joined William. When she arrived she had their 3 daughters and 2 illegitimate sons, Richard (born c.1842) and John (born c.1847). When they arrived in Australia Richard used the name Richard Prowse EASTLEY.
I am currently trying to ascertain who Richard and John's father/s is/are. Not an easy task byany means! ;D Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Johanna Blake
- North Molton
I am looking for the husband for Johanna Blake. She has 4 Illg. children from 1791 to 1806. Also, any reason or suggestions why she would have 4 Illg. children? Wouldn't one be a shame for her back then? Could she have been taken advantage of, and if so, under what circumstances could it be? Could husband not be a member of church of england and thus children illg? I come from the youngest child, a son, and live in the USA and am not familuar with the "what if" or possibilities for that time period in england. Any suggestions or name of husband with documentation is most helpful. Thanks

SHAPLAND/CHAPLAND
- North Molton
I am researching a branch of the Shapland family who originated in North Molton and moved to the Cardiff area. The earliest ancestor we know of was a WILLIAM SHAPLAND (born around 1800 in North Molton), whose wife was MARY (born around 1802 in North Molton). I believe that William may have had a brother GEORGE (b1803).
William and Mary had the following children that I know of: HENRY (1828) GRACE (1836) JOHN (1839) and MARY (1840). Henry was at various stages in his career a fruiterer, hotel manager, potato merchant and market gardener. His brother John was also a greengrocer.
By the time of the 1861 census these people and their families are all in Glamorgan (mainly around Whitchurch Cardiff) - and we know that Henry and his wife JANE (nee Harris) were already in Aberdare by 1854, when their oldest daughter MARY was born.
We are stuck at this point, and would love to be able to find out who William's parents were - and further back if possible. (I would hazard a guess that his mother's name may have been GRACE, as both William and his brother George have a daughter by that name, but this IS only a guess.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sue
