Tooze family - Holcombe Rogus
I am trying to piece together the rather complicated family 'tree' for the above. The village seems to have been full of Toozes in the 19thC, almost 1/10th of the population! My own line I have mapped to Thomas, born about 1750, who married a Dorothy, and had a son Thomas, born 1776. I would like to put the many family members into context, and take the line back farther. Why is the churchyard so badly maintained, and why are there no Tooze stones, as they were not paupers? They are now one of the counties recognised and respected Chairmaking families.

Robert Strong was born about 1808 in Holcombe Rogus. His parents may have been James Strong sp. Joan Shorland. Robert may have married Mary Sharland and then a 2nd marriage to Elizabeth Baker. They brought up John Sharland Strong, William H. Strong, Henrietta J. Strong, Drusilla Strong, Sydney Sharland Strong, Fred Strong, Ellen Strong, Emma Strong and Albert Strong in the Tiverton area. I'm trying to find the ancestors of these folks.

On behalf of a friend I'm trying to find a birth and/or Christening for Robert Strong. Born between 1806 - 1810 according to various census returns. He was born either Holcombe Regis,Devon or Tiverton,Devon - again varies between different census returns, although we believe he was born in Holcombe Regis and lived in Tiverton after his marriage. Robert married Elizabeth Baker 9/12/1839 in Tiverton. He died 1879 in Tiverton. According to his marriage cert, when he married Elizabeth, he was a widower, If anybody could find a previous marriage for him (possibly to Mary Sharland), I would be most grateful.

My g.g.g. grandfather was James Tooze who was born in Holcombe in approx 1817. He was part of the chairmaking family and later moved to Clifton, Bristol where he married Amelia. His descendants William (born 1844) and James (born 1867)carried on the chair/cabinet making occupation in Clifton and Stokescroft in Bristol. Any information would be appreciated.

Holsworthy Poor Law Union 1850 - Holsworthy
Holsworthy Union - White - 1850 - p 787 The total average expenditure on the poor, during the 3 years preceding the formation of the Union, was £4173. The expenditure in 1838 was £2903; in 1839, £3321; & in 1849 £3662, including £670 for county rates. Mr George Braund is union clerk & supt.registrar. A workhouse has not yet been erected for this Union, but there is a small Poorhouse in the town.

In 1881 she gives her birthplace as 'Newton', but in 1891 and 1901 as Holsworthy. Can find no trace so far in birth indexes. Where was family in 1861 and 71? Was Sanders her mother's maiden name? Any connections and info sought.

I am looking for information on the ancestors of James Piper and his wife Eliza Grace Found. James was born in Holsworthy, Devonshire in 1818. James and Eliza married in 1840 in Kilkhampton, Cornwall, and moved to the U.S. via Canada around 1850-53. James' father's name was John, and he may have had a brother named John. Any information on James or Eliza's families would be appreciated.

William Perkins born in Clawton, Holsworthy about 1808. His wife, Grace, was possibly born in St. Gerrys in 1806 and his children (William (b 1841), Elizabeth (1844/5), Mary T (1846/7) and Jane (1848/9)) were all born in Clawton. All are shown as living in Galworthy near Tavistock in 1851 but do not appear in any other census returns except Elizabeth as a servant in Tavistock in 1861.

Honiton Poor Law Union 1850 - Honiton
Honiton - White - 1850 - p 368 comprises 28 parishes. Their total average annual expenditure during the 3 years preceding the formation of the Union, was £10,244; but for the year ending Lady Day 1849, it was £12,977.5s.10d, including salaries, county rates etc. The Union Workhouse, built in 1836, at the cost of £5022, is a stone building, with room for about 230 inmates. 10 surgeons are employed by the Union, & the Rev H K Venn is the chaplain. H V Mules Esq is the union clerk; John & Mrs Coren are master & matron of the Workhouse; & William Gayler & Francis George Edwards are the relieving officers.
