Chowins-chowings - Jacobstowe & Hatherleigh
- Hatherleigh
My ggrandfather, James Cotton Chowins was born in Jacobstowe in 1835. He came to America in 1869. Following him to America was a brother, Harry Westlake Chowins and eventually 4 nephews of another brother, Edmund Chowins. Having been trying to establish the grand-parents of James Cotton Chowins. It appears that his parents were James Chowins and Elizabeth Westlake. James Chowins parents were a Henry Chowins and Amey Cotton. The problem is there have been connections reported to two different Henry Chowins. One would have been only 15 years when married. Any help would be appreciated

Heanton Punchardon Church
- Heanton Punchardon
I'm looking for information about the Church of England (I believe) that would be in Heanton Punchardon from 1896 - 1901. One of my ancestors was the curate there -- Rev. Robert M. Hawkins. His granddaughter, Margaret, from Canada, was taken back to England to live there with him for a number of years. Rev. Hawkins wife was named Agnes or Charlotte and they had a daughter Margaret as well as the Canadian granddaughter I mentioned. Mostly I would like to know about the church -- large? small? stone? brick? Where would the minister and his family have lived etc. If anyone can help I'd sure be thankful!
