comprises 23 parishes. The total average annual expenditure on the poor is now about £9500, but before the parishes were united it was only about £7500. The Workhouse is a neat stone building, which was erected in 1837, at the cost of £4000, & has room for 250 inmates, but has seldom more than 180. Mr W G Glubb is union clerk & supt.registrar; Mr & Mrs Luard are master & matron of the workhouse; & the Rev G W T Carwithenis the chaplain

Looking for anything about the ancestors of John Vowden, shown on the 1851 census as born in Halwill. He married Fanny Down from Northlew in 1851 and moved to Cornwall. John was born c1822 and his father was also John Vowden. Census of 1851 shows John Jnr. as as a widower and I'd like to discover more about his first marriage and his family in general. The oral history of our family Harbourne has always included Harbourneford as a place where the family lived going back to the Norman Conquest. We have never been able to verify any of it, including a favorite story of a great aunt Violinta Harbourne that the Harbournes were evicted from their lands for poaching on the king's land about the fifteen century.
