William Tozer - 1770's - Exeter
Looking for assistance with the origins of a William Tozer said to have been from the Exeter area; probably born circa 1770. He had moved to London by 1799 where his occupation was lathrenderer. According to the IGI William had a wife Margaret and they produced seven children all baptised between 1799 and 1810 at St George the Martyr, Southwark, London. Just where the couple married and Margaret’s origins are currently not known – any suggestions ? In 1804 William became an active follower of the Devon born prophetess Joanna Southcott who he may have known previously in the Exeter area. Although not one of her innermost circle of followers in 1805 William was given the task of building a Southcott chapel in Duke Street, St Georges Fields in London and later became the minister there. It is recorded that an Elizabeth Tozer attended meetings with him in the 1820’s but who she was is not clear. William died in 1828.

JANET MAUDE RUSSELL birth could have been Malta in 1882. - Exeter
We are desperate to find the birth parents and place of birth of someone we knew as Janet Maud(Maude) Russell, as far as we are aware she was born 12 December 1879, it is possible that this person was adopted at a very early age, have checked with GRO Southport and they cannot find a birth registration of Janet Maud Russell, two years either side of this date, so our thoughts are that she could have been born abroad or been 'adopted' she married as Janet Maud Russell. She was in Exeter in 1898. Does anyone know of a Mawes Rectory, Exeter? Janet was given a book inscribed 'with her Rectors Best Wishes at Whitsuntide, Mawes Rectory, Exeter in 1898'. She married in London 1902 to Fredk. G. Caines. On her marriage certificate her father was said to be William Russell - Midshipman. We cannot find her at all on 1881, 1891 or 1901 census, there is no registration of a birth of Janet Maud(Maude) Russell from 1870 onwards anywhere, Maybe she was just Maude at home, perhaps the Janet was added by herself, She must have come from somewhere, do you have a Janet Russell or even a Maud(e) Russell in your tree in 1881, 1891 or in 1901, we would love to hear from you if you have, she was my husband's grandmother, we know she existed, we met her many times, we just cannot find where she was born and grew up. or who her parents were. Hope someone can help. Thank you.

Henry Seymour, Catherine Standish - Exeter
My great-grandfather, Henry Seymour, states that he was born in Exeter (c 1836) in all the census from 1871 onwards. In these he was living in Liverpool. He was variously a mariner and a rigger. Hoewever I cannot find him in the 1841, '51, or '61 censuses. I can accept that he was at sea in 1861, and maybe even in 1851, but where was he in 1841 at the age of 5 or thereabouts? Henry married Catherine Standish in Liverpool in 1862. She was the daughter of William Standish (b c1811 in Wigan) and Elizabeth (b c1809 Wigan). Catherine and her brother Thomas were born in Salford according to the 1851 census. This, however, is the only sighting I have of her family
