Edward William Samuel Prouse born Ashbury Devon 1849
- Ashbury
I am trying to find out the name of my Grt Grt grandfathers mother. My grt grt grandfathers full name was Edward William Samuel Prouse and he was born in Ashbury between april and august 1949. There is no birth entry for him and he first appears on the 1851 census as Edward S Prouse living in north tawton with the Evans family as a visitor. There is an Ellen Burridge living there as a lodger also. He then appears on the 1861 census as Edward Prouse aged 11 inchagford as a servant with the Dodds family. He then disapears, he isnt on the 1871 census and doesnt reapear until 1873 when he has moved from devon to brotton in the north riding of yorkshire where he appears on the marriage index as Samuel Prouse when he married his wife Mary Ann Carter, she is from St cleer cornwall. They then appear on the 1881,1891 and 1901 censuses living in Marske again in Yorkshire with their children and he is down as Samuel Prouse. On the birth marriage certificate of my Great Grandad he is down as Samuel William Prouse, on his second marriage certificate to his second wife Mary Ann French he is down as Edward S Prouse and on his death certificate, he died on the 7/08/1932 he is Edward William Samuel Prouse.
I know that he was an illigiamate child and his father is unknown. His mother however was thrown out of her home when her family found out she was pregnant, which is howcome he was born in Ashbury when there wasnt any prouses living there. What happened to his mother after her was born i dont know as by 1851 when he was 2 he was in north tawton with another family.
In 1910 there was an advert put in the news of the world asking Edward W S Prouse to go back to devon to collect his inheritance so presumably his mother family knew about him but didnt know where he was, was that why he changed his name? was he hiding from them? anyway he never went to collect his inheritance.
Does anyone know of a child in their family history that disapeared? Does anyone know of an illigimate child in their family history?

Charles Strickland
- Ashbury
Charles was my great-great-great grandfather, and lived at Wadland Cottage, Ashbury from around 1820 till he died in 1859.
He managed the local hunt, and when that closed down he became a gamekeeper on the Woolcombe estate. I don't know very much more about him except that he was originally from Dorset. I'd be very interested to hear if anyone knows of any photos of him or his family (wife Elizabeth and children Louise, Silas and Henry), or indeed if anyone has any photos of Ashbury or of any of its other inhabitants around that time.
