SKERRITT, STORER & SMITH Families - Ripley
I am seeking additional information on my SKERRITT, STORER and SMITH ancestors prior to their coming to the US in 1881.
I have found my family on the 1881 census and I have obtained from the GRO birth and marriage certificates. Additionally, I was sent the 1851 census index for my SKERRITT family in Ripley.
What I have:
Birth:
Francis Henry SKERRITT b. 27 Apr 1851 Greenhillocks to Francis SKERRITT and Mary SKERRITT nee SMITH
Hannah STORER b. 8 Feb 1852 at 4 AM Derby to Elizabeth STORER, no maiden name, no father entered.
Marriage:
30 Sept 1871 Francis Henry SKERRITT s/o Francis SKERRITT to Hannah STORER d/o John STORER at Holloway Chapel, Belper, Derby. This ceremony was listed as inaccordance with the Methodist Free Church rites.
Births their children:
Harry b. 21 Apr 1872 Bridle Lane
Bertha b. 13 Sept 1873 Bridle Lane
Annie b. 10 Mar 1875 Greystock St. Brightside Bielow, Brightside, Sheffield, York
Maria b. 27 Sept 1879 Bridle Lane
1851 census index: Ripley
Francis SKERRITT 42y
Mary SKERRITT 40y
Ellen SKERRITT 16 y
Ann SKERRITT 11y
Robert SKERRITT 7y
Harriot SKERRITT 4y
John SKERRITT 2y
I have been told that a time on a birth record indicates a multiple birth. I have found an Ellen STORER same distric, volume and page as Hannah. I have sent to GRO for the certificate but as of this posting, have yet to receive it.
What I would like to find out:
1. DOB, place and parents for Francis SKERRITT the elder who is shown as the father of Francis Henry on the BC and on 1851 census index for Ripley.
2. DOB, place and parents for Mary SKERRITT nee SMITH.
3. DOB, place, maiden name and parents for Elizabeth STORER.
4. Are the John 48y and Elizabeth 47y STORER dwelling Butterly Hill with children John H. 19y, William 14y, Harry 10y and Joseph 7y the parents of Hannah STORER or are they just a coincidence of another couple of the same names as Hannah's parents?
5. Christening, burial locations, siblings on any of the above.
6. And sources, if possible, for any information so I may double check it for further clues and obtain copies for my records.
Mysteries:
Francis SKERRITT and Hannah SKERRITT nee STORER have a child Gertrude b. abt 1878 for whom no birth information can be found.
A 3 year old child, Gertrude SKERRITT, appears as a visitor on the day of the 1881 census in the household of Sarah STORER 67y, widow dwelling Bridle Lane. Also in the house that day are Martha STORER 26y, daughter; Henry WELLER or WEELER 6 mos, nurse child; and John W. WELLER or WEELER 3y, visitor. No information on the two boys under either surname can be found.
A Martha STORER is listed as a witness to the marriage of Francis and Hannah.
1. Is the Martha STORER on the 1881 census the same woman as the Martha STORER who is a witness at the marriage of Francis and Hannah?
2. Is the Gertrude SKERRITT, visitor, in Sarah STORER's household the child of Francis and Hannah?
3. What is the relationship, if any, of Sarah STORER to Hannah, John and Elizabeth STORER?
4. Who was Sarah STORER's husband?
5. Are the two WELLER/WEELER children and Gertrude SKERRITT in reality, siblings and illegitamate children of Martha STORER? Her occupation on the 1881 census is listed as "Dressmanker" and I have been told that it is sometimes a euphemism for prostitute.
6. Any information from anywhere on the two WELLER/WEELER children such as the correct surname, their father's name or their relationship to Sarah STORER.
I'm in NEW England and can't easily access British records except for ordering films at my local FHC and spending hours scrolling through them. I'd appreciate any little tidbit, no matter how insignificante it may seem. Who knows what it may lead to?
Thanks to one and all for any help and information you maybe able to offer me.
