Smith family of Heanor
- Heanor
Hi, I'm trying to trace the history of Mary Ann Smith who MIGHT be my GGG Grandmother. I found an online listing for St Lawrence Church that had a baptism 28 March 1813 - mother Sarah, father (illegitimate). A Mary/Mary Ann of the correct age and place of birth went on to marry Joseph Bentley. All census from 1841 show them living at Yardley, Worcestershire/Warwickshire. I have not been able to locate: birth of Mary/Mary Ann, marriage of Mary and Joseph (stop laughing), birth of their 3 older children. I have purchased a birth cert for their dau Sophia showing Mary Bentley formerly Smith. This is the only record that indicates her maiden name. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I will be eternally grateful. Also if anyone can provide info on Mary's mother Sarah. Hope to hear from someone soon! Thanks.

Anyone interested in Heanor before the coal period will find the records rather thin, though there are some potentially useful Heanor land documents at Nottinghamshire Archives. Oliver Piggin was vicar of Heanor till his death in 1547 and was somehow linked to the Oliver Piggin of Heanor who died in 1578. I have published some biographical material about Oliver Piggin online.
