Sparrows as pt of Eckington Diet
- Eckington
The LDS has filmed the Parish Chest material and Poor Law records.Film# 2082595. The original records are in Matlock but anyone not lucky enough to get there can order the film from either Salt Lake or your local fam history lib in England. It is well worth your effort. Imagine my surprise at seeing constant purchases of Sparrows by the parish council in the early 1800's.My first thought was that it was a place in Eckington but now after some research, I discovered that sparrows were eaten by the poor..described as the poor man's pheasant..skinned roasted and put on spits in front of the fire. So if you break into song frequently it's because your Eckington ancesters were fed birds. I have never come across this before.
